More Shocking Facts About Sodas Whether Diet Or Regular

Do you still need more reasons to get off carbonated soft drinks - Coke, Pepsi etc? Then you need to look at this website and read my previous BLOG Posts on the dangers of carbonated soft drinks. One of the most important, NOT mentioned on this site is the PH FACTOR.

http://health.yahoo.net/experts/eatthis/3-shocking-soda-facts

EXCERPTS:

Shocking Soda Fact #1: Soda fattens up your organs

A recent Danish study revealed that drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic increases in dangerous hard-to-detect fats. Researchers asked participants to drink either regular soda, milk containing the same amount of calories as regular soda, diet cola, or water every day for six months. The results? Total fat mass remained the same across all beverage-consuming groups, but regular-soda drinkers experienced dramatic increases in harmful hidden fats, including liver fat and skeletal fat. The regular-soda group also experienced an 11 percent increase in cholesterol compared to the other groups! And don’t think switching to diet varieties will save you from harm: Artificial sweeteners and food dyes have been linked to brain cell damage and hyperactivity, and research has shown that people who drink diet soda have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Shocking Soda Fact #2: Soda contains flame retardants
Some popular soda brands, including Mountain Dew, use brominated vegetable oil—a toxic flame retardant—to keep the artificial flavoring from separating from the rest of the liquid. This hazardous ingredient—sometimes listed as BVO on soda and sports drinks—can cause bromide poisoning symptoms like skin lesions and memory loss, as well as nerve disorders. If that’s not a good enough reason not to “Do the Dew,” I don’t know what is. (We reveal more insidious ingredients hiding on supermarket shelves in the 15 Scariest Food Additives).

Shocking Soda Fact #3: Drinking soda makes you a lab rat

Many American soda brands are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, a heart-harming man-made compound derived mainly from genetically engineered corn. The problem? Genetically engineered ingredients have only been in our food chain since the 1990s, and we don't know their long-term health impacts because the corporations that developed the crops never had to test them for long-term safety. Case in point: Some recent findings suggest that genetically engineered crops are linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated aging, and even infertility!

My Input:

There is an awful lot of evidence that should convince you to GET OFF any kind of sodas. PH FACTOR for various sodas listed here:

(MY INPUT) the ideal PH balance for the human body is between 7.3 to 7.4. SEE my POSTS on Interstitial Fluid ( 6/6/11 "Interstitial Fluid and Type 2 Diabetes For Dummies") surrounding our billions of cells. Drinking carbonated sodas whether diet or regular upsets this balance and contributes to disease. SEE POSTS ON PH FACTOR: 1/24/11, 1/25/11, 3/8/11, 5/3/11 and 5/27/11, 8/7/11 and 1/20/12.

Interesting Website on PH of Foods and Cause Of Illness and Disease

In my studies, I keep coming back to the PH factor of foods and drinking ENOUGH pure water as a big factor in over coming Type2 Diabetes and a host of other ailments.

In my case giving up diet soda (or any soda), and drinking green smoothies has made a big difference in the way I feel and my BG readings and blood pressure readings. I also try and get in at least 1/2 hour brisk walk every day and work out with the weights doing squats, and push ups etc. every other day.

  • I like green smoothies: (TRY 1 medium apple, 1/2 cucumber, 3 stalks of celery, handful of red grapes, handful of baby spinach, 1 packet of stevia, add cold water and mix in a Vita Mixer or Ninja type processor until smooth and creamy)
  • I like large raw salads: Romaine lettuce, carrots, celery, cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, garbanzo beans, tuna fish, yellow squash, different types of kidney beans etc., apple and a little Italian dressing to taste with  extra virgin OLIVE OIL.
  • TRY to drink pure water as opposed to everything else.
  • AVOID like the plague any and all carbonated sodas, and other diet drinks containing Aspartame, Splenda and other artificial harmful sugar replacement sweeteners.
  • I like lightly steamed fresh broccoli and green beans
  • I also like sliced yellow squash lightly browned in a non-stick frying pan with extra virgin olive oil

EXCERPTS:

INTRODUCTION TO "pH" (revised May 9th 2004, still needs more work)
Your "pH" is very important to your health, and is a Major concern.

LOW "pH": If your "pH" is too low (consumption of too much ACIDITY, which is very common), it wears your body down; the ACIDS attack your glands, its a struggle to live, and you can easily catch many diseases. Acidity also cause OBESITY and OVER WEIGHT problems.

HIGH "pH": If you maintain a high pH you will experience less disease, better health, less weight gain, better temperament, and not only will you be nicer to everyone around you, but everyone will be nicer to you (with only the occasional intentional use of Low pH to kill off bacteria & viruses, which live at the same pH of 7.4, which is the same pH which live at).

CONCLUSIONS: pH is one of the most important things in both Mental Health and Physical Health, and I urge you to read this entire page. I am convinced (after reading and studying many aspects of health and nutrition) that "Low pH" alone, is the Root Cause for at least 50% of diseases leading to hospitalization, cancer on down the line, etc, etc, including psychological disturbances, and that people who DRINK WATER are generally HEALTHY PEOPLE (you need a half gallon to 1.5 gallons max per day as per The Merck Manual, standard medical reference). Those people who drink Water don't have the same problems that everyone else does. They don't have to join A.A., they don't have to be hospitalized for Psychological disturbances (unless depressed, in which case 100 mg of B Vitamins daily will fix that quick, B1 Thiamine, B2 Riboflavin, B6 Pyridoxine, and B12 Cobalium, in the form of a B Complex or B Stress or B 1000 or B 100 sold at most groceries).

ANY BEVERAGE provides you with necessary FLUIDS for survival, but ONLY WATER will help you maintain a proper "pH".

SODA, JUICES, COFFEE & TEA are NOT a Substitute for WATER:
as Soda (and other beverages) have a dangerously low pH.
I shake hands with people, and 30 to 60 seconds later my hand is burning due to their low pH, I can imagine how much they are suffering (but they are used to it, but if they only knew, and I do try to help them when I can). I have a health food expert friend who works in the medical industry, and she tells me of patients who come in with major problems, and their blood test results show a very low level of pH (near death). No wonder. They don't drink water. They think other beverages will do.

"The pH Miracle" by Young and Young, a top quality, top selling, Excellent Book. Shows that while many foods have a safe pH level, their REACTIVITY in the body causes a dangerously low "pH REACTIVITY".
"The pH Miracle" has several lists in the book, and refers to it as RELATIVE POTENTIAL or Acidity (-) or Alkalinity (+). Its best to get the whole book, but here is some chart information. Keep in mind that the scale used here is NOT a "pH scale", it is more extreme in numbers, and neutral is exactly "0" zero.

MORE ON STATINS and OTHER Potentially Dangerous Drugs

I have been researching a little more on dangerous side effects of different drugs and also synergism (or interactions with other substances and other drugs you may be taking).

Some of it is scary stuff indeed. Here is a LINK to drug side effects you need to be aware of:

http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14046942.php

EXCERPTS:

Doctors Ignore Potentially Damaging Drug Side Effects

Most doctors get their information about drugs from the pharmaceutical companies that sell them. There companies have a long record of suppressing information about damaging side effects of these drugs. Periodically, one of these drugs will kill or injure enough people that it comes to the attention of the FDA and the media. This was the case with the SSRIs that cause suicidal behavior in many children and Rezulin which caused liver failure in some diabetics.
I've been saying this for years, finally a study was published documenting how true it is.

Physician Response to Patient Reports of Adverse Drug Effects: Implications For Patient-Targeted Adverse Effect Surveillance.Golomb, Beatrice A, et al. Drug Safety. 30(8):669-675, 2007.

This study of a group of patients prescribed a statin drug found that
Eighty-seven percent of patients reportedly spoke to their physician about the possible connection between statin use and their symptom....Physicians were reportedly more likely to deny than affirm the possibility of a connection. Rejection of a possible connection was reported to occur even for symptoms with strong literature support for a drug connection, and even in patients for whom the symptom met presumptive literature-based criteria for probable or definite drug-adverse effect causality.
In plain English, even when a patient had a dangerous symptom that was flagged in the drug's prescribing information, doctors usually ignored it!

The article also points out that because they appear to believe drugs don't have side effects most doctors are not reporting NEW side effects to the FDA, even when patients experience them.

(Another excerpt)

Statins

Statins are very expensive drugs used to lower LDL cholesterol whose manufacturers invest heavily in research meant to prove that everyone on the planet should take them for the rest of their lives--especially people with diabetes. Whether or not this is true is still subject to debate, but that isn't the topic here.
The issue here is that statins have serious, even fatal, side effects that many doctors ignore.

Muscle Damage

The best known dangerous side effect of the statins is called "Rhabdomyolysis." What that medical mouthful means in English is "breakdown of muscle fibers." As these fibers break down, they release by-products that are toxic to the kidneys. If enough muscle breaks down, you can die.
Most doctors know about this side effect, but they often fail to warn patients about it. As a results, patients on statins may start experiencing muscle pains and weakness while having no idea that this is a symptom of this dangerous side effect.
A study that highlights some factors that make the dangerous breakdown of muscle with statins more likely found,

"The risk of myopathy is increased by: the use of high doses of statins, concurrent use of fibrates, concurrent use of hepatic cytochrome P450 inhibitors, acute viral infections, major trauma, surgery, hypothyroidism and other conditions."

Statin-associated myopathy. Hamilton-Craig I.Med J Aust. 2001 Nov 5;175(9):486-9.

Note that hypothyroidism, (low thyroid) is common among people with Type 2 diabetes.

This study also concludes:
Statin-associated myopathy should be suspected when a statin-treated patient complains of unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness. Statin therapy should be stopped in cases of suspected myopathy, and serum creatine kinase levels should be checked and monitored. No specific therapies other than statin withdrawal and supportive measures for rhabdomyolysis are currently available.
So if you start experiencing worsening muscle pains while on a statin drug contact your doctor immediately and don't let them brush this side effect off as unimportant. The heart is a muscle, too!

Additional statistics from research studies about the incidence of muscle pain with statins is found in this article:

Bandolier: Rhabdomyolysis with statins.

(MY INPUT)

As mentioned previously I was placed on LIPITOR AND TRICOR together a few years back and after a few months on BOTH, took myself off both. I was experiencing side effects from both and that is when I took action on my own to change my diet and exercise habits as I WANTED TO LIVE.

CHECK IT OUT. Be proactive, study side effects of every prescription drug you are taking and also look at possible synergism with the foods you eat, the drink you drink including alcohol and snynergism with other drugs.

Risk Involved In Older Women taking Statin Drugs and Type 2 Diabetes

I have come across several websites and articles lately indicating a risk between developing type 2 diabetes and taking statin drugs.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_120586.html

You can click on the link above to read MORE.

Mentioned in the Jan 9th Archives Of Internal Medicine 154,000 women were involved in the study. The study started in 1993 and the average age of women in the study was 63 and 7% of them were taking statin drugs. By the year 2005, more than 10,200 had developed diabetes. The article goes on to say that women taking statin drugs had 1.5X higher chance of developing diabetes.

It further states that women on statins should check with their doctor's to determine IF then need to be on statins and evaluate the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and to see if their statin dose could possibly be lowered. At the same time the study results indicated that the women should stay on the statins, as there are many factors influencing the development of type 2 diabetes including diet and exercise habits, weight control, etc.

Anne Culver who is a contributing author and pharmacist with the University Of Massachusetts Medical School indicates that "Statins may be a contributing factor to the way the body manages insulin and glucose responses".

(MY INPUT) - I have not found a link to this study for MEN, however it makes me wonder, since I was on Lipitor and Tricor both a few years ago and there was a HOST of side effects involving those two drugs. For women I think it is a good thing to know and they should be checking with their Diabetic doctor concerning the statin drugs and dose age they might be on and factor in the length of time they have been taking statins. They should also take steps to control their diet and weight better, and follow other guidelines for type 2 diabetics as far as exercise and the latest research from a nutritional standpoint in controlling diabetes.
