Stress and Inflammation Deadly To Type 2 Diabetics

Been reading a book review of "The Blood Sugar Solution" The Ultra-Healthy Program for Losing Weight, Preventing Disease, and Feeling Great Now" by Mark Hayman MD.

Here are some highlights and thoughts on the content of the book:

  • The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in America has tripled since the 1980's resulting in more than 27 MILLION Americans with diabetes and 67 MILLION with pre-diabetes.
  • Estimates are that within 8 years 50% or one out of two Americans will have full blown type 2 diabetes or will be diagnosed as PRE-diabetic.
  • From 1983 to 2008 the number of people in the world WITH DIABETES increased SEVENFOLD from 35 to 240 MILLION.
  • Following that from 2008 to 2011 we added another 110 MILLION diabetics to our global population - That is astounding, mind blowing information.

The whole process is being called DIABESITY which stems from diabetes and obesity which go hand in hand.  That is being defined as the move from optimal blood sugar balance towards insulin resistance and full blown diabetes.
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of heart disease, dementia, cancer, and premature death in the world. The sad part is that it is almost entirely caused by environmental and lifestyle factors.

The book deals with the problem of physicians being trained to offer medication or surgery to solve diabetes (and disease in general) and ignoring the REAL CAUSES of poor quality diet, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, allergens, microbes, digestive imbalances, toxins, cellular energy problems and STRESS.

The book also indicates that contrary to popular belief type 2 diabetes and disabesity are diseases of TOO MUCH and not too little insulin. Insulin is the real driver of problems with diabetes. If your diet is full of empty calories and refined carbs, your cells become resistant or in essence NUMB to the effects of insulin. A HIGHER insulin level is the FIRST sign of a problem

TOO much insulin known as "the fat storage hormone" also drives more inflammation and oxidative stress and produces a myriad of down stream effects including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low HDL, high triglycerides, poor sex drive, infertility, thickening of the blood, increased risk of cancer, Alzheimer's and DEPRESSION.

Chronic stress increases the production of cortisol known as the main stress hormone (I.E. God put it there for the occasional flight or fight syndrome"). Problem is that many of us are in a more or less constant state of flight or fight syndrome. We were NOT meant to live our lives that way.

Elevated cortisol can cause high BG levels, elevated cholesterol, depression, dementia and promotes the accumulation of belly fat.

Anything that causes INFLAMMATION will in turn cause "insulin resistance".

The real path out of this merry-go-round is major diet and lifestyle changes along with a comprehensive nutritional supplement program.

Suggestions are just what I have been preaching since I started reading about diabetes for myself. HERE is a partial list:

High potency comprehensive multi vitamin
Fish oil
Vitamin D3 / 5000IU 1X daily
Magnesium (preferable magnesium-L-Threonate)
Zinc

For other important suggestions on supplements, please go to my labels tab and look up recommendations on what to take under the supplements column.

For lifestyle changes, please look under the label section for posts on exercise for diabetics.

Diabetes is a HUGE problem and you can't fight it with half-hearted measures.
