Inflamation, Inflamation, Inflamation & Type 2 Diabetes?

More and more research keeps pointing the way to inflamation being a root cause of type 2 diabetes.

List of inflammatory diseases

A comprehensive list of inflammatory diseases would run to over 100, each of which have high levels of inflammation in the connective tissues, or degeneration of these tissues. These include...

ADD Type 2 Diabetes to this list.

  • Alzheimer's
  • ankylosing spondylitis
  • arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis)
  • asthma
  • atherosclerosis
  • Crohn's disease
  • colitis
  • dermatitis
  • diverticulitis
  • fibromyalgia
  • hepatitis
  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • systemic lupus erythematous (SLE)
  • nephritis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • ulcerative colitis
Inflammation is the end result of long term oxidative stress. The stress can be caused by emotional or physical trauma, and nutritional or environmental pollutants. In most cases it is something of everything.

The question is what has caused the oxidative stress. Food is a major culprit, sugar being the number one culprit as it causes glycation. Sugar in any form, ie starchy carbohydrates like potatoes, legumes, sweet fruit or root vegetables, sugar in drinks, sauces, tinned food etc., and in particular grains and anything made from them such as bread, cakes, biscuits, pasta etc. These all convert to glucose.
Glycation occurs when a sugar molecule binds to a protein or lipid molecule without the control of an enzyme. This impairs the function of the molecule, leading to advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), resulting in many of our inflammatory diseases. AGE's are particularly high in diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes: Inflammation, Not Obesity, Cause Of Insulin Resistance

ScienceDaily (Nov. 6, 2007) — Researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine have discovered that inflammation provoked by immune cells called macrophages leads to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Their discovery may pave the way to novel drug development to fight the epidemic of Type 2 diabetes associated with obesity, the most prevalent metabolic disease worldwide.

In recent years, it has been theorized that chronic, low-grade tissue inflammation related to obesity contributes to insulin resistance, the major cause of Type 2 diabetes. In research done in mouse models, the UCSD scientists proved that, by disabling the macrophage inflammatory pathway, insulin resistance and the resultant Type 2 diabetes can be prevented.

"Our research shows that insulin resistance can be disassociated from the increase in body fat associated with obesity," said Olefsky.
Macrophages, found in white blood cells in the bone marrow, are key players in the immune response. When these immune cells get into tissues, such as adipose (fat) or liver tissue, they release cytokines, which are chemical messenger molecules used by immune and nerve cells to communicate. These cytokines cause the neighboring liver, muscle or fat cells to become insulin resistant, which in turn can lead to Type 2 diabetes

You can help Fight inflamation with supplements such as Vitamin D3, Vitamin C and Vitamin E:

STRESS Causes Inflammation Causes Diabetes

I know I sound like a broken record, however the more I read and study the more articles and research I am seeing on stress as a major cause of inflammation which contributes to diabetes. Whether that stress is psychological or  emotional or physical stress all three cause the body to pump out cortisol which in turn causes inflammation.

I have mentioned before that stress in the instance of an unexpected and sudden bear attack in the wilderness is a good thing as it gives you energy to FIGHT the bear or RUN away from the bear. That is the way God designed us. The problem comes in when the bear (stress) is never ending and there seems to be no escape. Many of us live day in and day out with that type of stress and it does take a toll on us.

Inflammation can also come from environmental toxicity from the air, water and  toxic metals such as mercury or lead. Another source might be TOO MUCH sugar, fat or protein, not enough water (dehydration) and carbonated soft drinks such as Pepsi or coke etc. whether diet or not.

An imbalance of friendly bacteria in your digestive tract can also cause stress and all of these things create inflammation.

Inflammation has been linked to cancer, diabetes, arthritis, acid reflux, premature aging (wrinkles),  high blood pressure, bronchitis, heart disease and a host of other ailments.

One thing you can do every day to help eliminate inflammation and balance your system is to drink green smoothies 2 or 3 times a day. I highly recommend using a Vita Mixer or something similar as opposed to a juicer, for the simple reason you retain all of the pulp and fiber and minerals etc. present in the vegetables. If you use a juicer, you are throwing away all the fiber and drinking only concentrated juice. Most people tend to focus on juicing fruits as opposed to vegetables and as a diabetic you end up getting too much sugar into your system.

Green smoothies (celery, baby spinach, romaine lettuce, spring salad mix, carrots, cucumbers, etc. will do wonders for your PH balance.)

Add in sparingly ..............an apple, and/or 1/2 a mango, a few red grapes, or a 1/2 of a pear, banana etc.

I would concentrate on the green veggies and put in enough fruit to sweeten the taste. You might also want to add a teaspoon of barley grass powder or one of the green powder drinks to the mix such as a"All Day Energy Greens". Add enough water to mix, perhaps a stevia packet or two and 4 or 5 ice cubes and let your Vita Mixer turn those veggies and fruit into a healthful filling power packed smoothies.

Benefits:

  • Balances your interstitial fluid PH
  • Accelerates bodily repair
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves insulin resistance
  • Lowers blood pressure (read my blog posts on celery and BP)
  • Improves the kidneys and liver function
  • Helps detox the body
  • Improves blood glucose readings
  • Reduces cravings for the wrong kind of foods

Try one today, NO wait a minute....try two or three today and every day. Veggies are some of the best buys in the grocery store, especially celery, spinach etc.
