TAURINE - A Fresh Look At The Benefits

I recently read an informative article on the longevity benefits of getting enough Taurine in your diet. The article starts off by talking about the Japanese people who have more people over the age of 100 than any other culture. When I did several blog posts on iodine, I know the Japanese get a lot of iodine from seal kelp. Another item they get a lot of is TAURINE.

Scientists are calling Taurine a "wonder molecule."

Let's look at some of the benefits:

  • Promotes cardiovascular health
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Electrolyte balance
  • Hearing function
  • Immune modulation
  • Reduces obesity - A study showed that 3 grams of taurine per day for 7 weeks reduced body weight in an over weight (BUT NOT YET DIABETIC) group
  • Animal research also showed protection against heart failure up to 80%

IF YOU are vegetarian, you should consider adding a Taurine supplement to your diet as most vegetarians lack Taurine.

Certain diseases also cause a deficiency in taurine:

  • Liver
  • Kidney
  • Heart failure
  • DIABETES
  • Cancer

The older you are the less efficient your body is at producing Taurine. The authors of a study done in 2012 indicate that taurine is one of the most essential substances in the human body.

Let's take a look at the diabetes connection:

First of all it is a known fact that taurine concentrations are lower in diabetics that in otherwise healthy individuals. There is research being done in using taurine to help prevent onset type 2 diabetes. It has been shown that supplementing with 1.5 grams of taurine daily can restore  taurine levels to equal healthy individuals. It has been shown that in adult diabetics supplementing with 1.5 grams of taurine for just 14 days can reverse diabetes-induced abnormalities in arterial stiffness and in the ability of the vasculature to respond to changes in blood flow or pressure. This could be CRITICAL TO the longevity of diabetics, since these types of abnormalities are to blame for diabetics increased risk of dying from  cardiovascular disease.

I have only touched the surface of the benefits of taking taurine. It also is valuable in providing potent retina protection, helping to possibly reverse tinnitus, plays a role in perhaps being a solution for seizures, possibly prevents and treats liver disease, increases the action of insulin improving glucose tolerance, acts as an antioxidant, vital for the proper function of potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium, helps regulate heart rhythm, cardiac contraction, blood pressure, platelet aggregation, detoxifies liver cells of various toxins, helps form bile acids and maintains cell membrane stability and also plays a role in the synthesis of lipids and cholesterol that are associated with atherosclerosis.

It is DIFFICULT to obtain adequate amounts of taurine from food and diet alone. That being said, where can you purchase it? ALL of this information is from this months Life Extension Magazine and the Life Extension folks sell taurine listed as item #00199 which  is a bottle of 50 caps containing 1000mg each for $8.95 and if you purchase 4 bottle the price is $8.00 each. LOWER rates are available for Life Extension members.

Another source which I use for other supplements is Swanson and they have several listings of taurine for sale. Here is a link to SWANSON:
