Protection Against BRAIN AGING

I will be 68 years young this October. WHOA!, how did that happen? Looking back, I discovered "One day at a time". I really don't feel like I am 67 years old. I don't think about it much either. I PRAY a lot, try to eat right, research the latest information I can find on the right exercise, diet and vitamin/mineral supplementation, etc. and give the rest to the Lord.

I enjoy reading "Life Extension Magazine" and have learned much about Type 2 Diabetes, newest supplements and research on aging etc.

I happened to come across the Winter 2013-2014 edition yesterday and an article concerning "Brain Aging" and restoring cerebral blood flow caught my eye.

Here are some highlights from the article. The first sentence of the article indicates our brains are under assault from environmental toxins, oxidant stress, inflammation, blood flow fluctuations, and EXCESS GLUCOSE. It also mentions the LACK of medical options to halt the steady march toward mental darkness. Pharmaceutical intervention is largely palliative and CANNOT cure or restore lost brain function.

What then can one do?

For thousands of years, Chinese doctors have used gastrodin, which is extracted from the root of the exotic orchid, Gastrodia elata , to treat a range of cognitive problems ranging from vertigo and headaches to paralysis and seizure. Modern science indicates that gastrodin  acts like a broad spectrum brain shield protecting against many factors that cause age-related degradation of our mental processes.

Life Extension (1-800-544-4440) OR (www.LifeExtension.com) offers a product called Brain Shield item #01802 which is a bottle of 60 caps containing 300 mg. As of the date the article was written, the bottle of 60 caps retailed for $33 or if purchased during super sales days and a member purchases (4) bottles the price is $20.25 each.

The article also mentioned reducing the cognitive risks of open heart surgery. I went through a quadruple bypass operation in July of 2013. To my knowledge I did NOT suffer any ill effects of memory loss or cognitive impairments. Apparently 42% of bypass patients DO suffer cognitive decline including memory loss which can last from weeks to months or FOREVER following bypass surgery. The scary part is that these same effects from normal aging that can take years to manifest themselves can occur following one day of open heat surgery.

In one human clinical trial, intensive care specialists in China, injected gastrodin or a saline control solution in 200 patients undergoing open heart surgery. Prior to surgery all the patients tested normal on memory and cognition. After the operation they found that 42% of the patients had cognitive decline, which included memory loss. The outcome in the gastrodin treated group only had a baseline change of 9% which is a significant difference.

The article also mentions the possible role of gastrodin in combating damage from stroke, and in treating seizures, anxiety, treating migraine headaches, DIABETIC NEUROPATHY, and other old age related memory loss etc.
