Melatonin Is More Than Just A Sleep Aid!

From time to time I mention that a lot of my research and information comes from reading articles put out by Life Extension Magazine. Since I recently did a post on the negative possible effects of anesthesia and the post on Prevagen possibly being beneficial for seniors in helping to avoid or possibly counter act dementia and Alzheimer's, I found an article from Life Extension magazine entitled, REPORT - Beyond Sleep in their Sept 2013 issue.

I used to take Melatonin once in a while if I had a lot on my mind, or was having one of those nights when I was so tired or stressed out, I simply couldn't sleep. I had NO idea that the health benefits of melatonin are far more reaching that just an occasional good night's sleep. Next post will be on ANY CAUTIONS OR INTERACTIONS WITH DRUGS THAT MIGHT BE CAUSED BY MELATONIN SUPPLEMENTATION.

Benefits mentioned in the article:

Melatonin has been shown to have an impressive ability to control oxidative damage in systems throughout the body which can reduce the trauma of brain injury. prevent heart muscle damage, offer neuroprotection, increase cognitive functioning and reduce toxic effects of chemotherapy while enhancing its benefits.

MOST of this research and findings have taken place in the past 5 or 6 years. It was thought for a long time that Melatonin was solely the product of the pineal gland in the brain and was secreted ONLY at night. Melatonin is now KNOWN to be produced in multiple body sites. This powerful hormone impacts virtually every cell with which it comes in contact with as well as being able to Cross the highly selective blood-brain barrier. It is derived from the amino acid L-Tryptophan. It has very impressive antioxidant properties and helps prevent tissue that take the brunt of oxidative and other injuries like the brain and spinal cord. It also protects against damage to the stomach, pancreas, and liver which are most vulnerable to such injuries. Melatonin also protects against cardiovascular diseases, degenerative brain diseases, brain injuries, stroke, and numerous cancers. It also has properties of being anti-inflammatory similar to ibuprofen as an example. Unlike anti-inflammatory drugs, melatonin has far fewer side effects and it does NOT inhibit the COX-1 enzyme that helps protect the stomach lining. Melatonin has also shown a healthy immune response in that early in the process of wound healing it has reduced pain perception in animal models of inflammation and can also increase the analgesic effects of NSAID drugs.

Melatonin has shown promise in reducing the damaging effects of brain injury and strokes.

I found the article fascinating and informative. Researchers believe we are on the tip of the iceberg in discovering all of melatonin's health benefits.

***(CAUTION)*** Consult a doctor before taking melatonin IF you are on prescription drugs such as warfin, (Coumadin) fluvoxamine (Luvox) or nifedipine (Procardia) (BLOOD THINNERS) and I have read certain blood pressure medicines.

God Bless, Dan

Genesis 1:29
King James Bible
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat

Psalm 139:14New King James Version (NKJV)

14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;[a]
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.

Unity and Diversity in the Body

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
