MY ADVICE:

Get off as many processed, packaged foods as you possibly can. Eat Quaker Oatmeal (NOT the individual packets), with blue berries added, and extra virgin coconut oil, organic ground flax seeds for Omega 3's and fiber, and 1/2 cup of "Fiber One" cereal which has NO sugar, no trans fats, and apprx 14 grams of fiber per 1/2 cup. To that I add 4 or 5 red grapes, a packet of stevia in the raw and some  unsweetened Almond Milk.

Eat a BIG salad every day with as much variety in vegetables, fruit and greens as you want. You can have iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, carrots peas, beans, cucumbers, broccoli, radishes, tomatoes. seedless grapes, celery, kale, sliced raw onion (IF you can tolerate it), Brussels sprouts,  etc. etc. and go ahead and add some cut up cooked chicken, or cheese etc. for protein. Add your favorite dressing (READ the label for sugar content AND trans fats, hydrogenated oils etc. and enjoy.

Eat a LIGHT dinner and don't eat again the last two hours before you go to bed.

Set an appointment with your doctor or specialist and have a blood lipid profile run, your official weight taken, your blood pressure etc. and let him or her know you are making changes in your life. You want to lose weight, avoid type 2 diabetes if you don't already have it or your A1C is border line.

Haven't been to the gym since high school? NO problemo. You don't need it. Start walking every day for 30 min at a brisk pace (or work up to that goal if you can't walk fast or that far).

Begin to do some stretching exercises, abdominal crunches, push ups if you can or dumb bell exercises starting with 10 lb dumb bells.

DO SOMETHING!

Losing weight is NOT a mystery. Eat less, eat better and exercise more.

YOU CAN DO IT!

God Bless,

Dan

SUGAR - Is Killing Us

Here are some facts to consider in regards to type 2 diabetes:

HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) starting being added to foods in the early 1970's

The number of Type 2 diabetics in America has doubled in the last 30 years...SEE any correlation here?????

SUCROSE or table sugar , is composed of equal amounts of glucose and fructose, the latter being the kind of sugar you find naturally in fruit.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is also a mixture of fructose and glucose with about 55%  (fructose) and 45% (glucose)  in soft drinks. Although glucose is metabolized by the cells all through your body, FRUCTOSE IS PROCESSED PRIMARILY IN THE LIVER.

Therefore if you eat too much too quickly in forms such as soft drinks, and candy, your liver breaks down the fructose and produces fats called triglycerides. Any guesstimates on how many teaspoons of sugar are in a typical fountain cola drink at a fast food restaurant?

Take a LOOK:

Eight teaspoons of sugar sounds like a lot, right? It is. A typical 16-ounce bottle of soda has 44 grams sugar, or about 11 teaspoons. Interestingly, the USDA notes that retail soda (the stuff you buy in the can at the store) has more sugar than the fountain soda you get from fast food restaurants since (they're served with ice that takes up some space in the cup).

NO, that doesn't make the sodas in fast food restaurants HEALTHY.
Here's the sugar and calorie content for a cup of soda from a typical fountain:
  • 12-ounce cup (child size): 23 grams sugar and 95 calories
  • 16-ounce cup (small): 31 grams sugar and 128 calories
  • 21-ounce cup (medium): 44 grams sugar and 180 calories
  • 32-ounce cup (large): 65 grams sugar and 267 calories
In 1980 there were 153 million Type 2 Diabetics in the USA
In 2013 there were 347 million Type 2 Diabetics in the USA

The average American consumes approximately 22.7 teaspoons of sugar daily.

Concerning Blood Pressure, I found this interesting:

1900 - 5% of the population had high blood pressure
2013 - 33% of the American public have high blood pressure

The more sugar you consume in all its forms, the more your tissues become progressively insulin RESISTANT, and the harder your pancreas works trying to pour out MORE INSULIN which over time becomes less effective and the deadly cycle continues.

Is it any wonder that approximately 1/3 of Americans meet the statistical criteria for "Metabolic Syndrome". Metabolic syndrome brings obesity, especially around the waist, which ultimately leads to Type 2 Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetics then take the attitude that they can still eat and/or drink anything they want to and just get hooked up with an insulin meter pump and forget about diet and exercise. After a while they realize it takes more and more insulin to control their glucose levels and it is a downhill spiral.

You need to EAT LESS, EXERCISE MORE, and avoid sugar in all its many forms. Stay away from simple empty calorie carb's including but not limited to:

Pies, cakes, candy, pudding, cookies. muffins, breads, biscuits, doughnuts, MOST store bought breakfast cereals, etc. etc.

EAT more fresh organic fruits and vegetables, and pencil in time for a 30 minute brisk walk every day.

SUGAR IS KILLING YOU and ONLY YOU can STOP EATING IT.

Take the time, give'em a lift.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery,
But today, YOU can be their gift"
