Arterial Disease Factors

Here is a partial list of things that can initiate and propagate vascular disease:

  • Excess LDL
  • Excess Insulin
  • LOW HDL
  • High Glucose
  • Nitric oxide deficit
  • Insufficient vitamin D
  • Low vitamin K
  • Excess triglycerides
  • Low free testosterone
  • Excess homocysteine
  • Hypertension
  • High cholesterol

What can be one about it?

The best approach is a multi-faceted approach involving diet, exercise (including aerobics and weight bearing exercises) and stretching. In addition one has to do some homework and decide what supplements to take.

A good place to start is with a complete blood lipid profile test including tests for testosterone levels, iodine levels, and if you can afford it or your insurance pays for it a "hair analysis" to determine any mineral deficiencies.

IF you are overweight, the best exercise is called the "Push Away" exercise. You perform this by eating one serving of each food group at a meal and then when dessert is brought on, you PUSH AWAY from the table. In simple terms, EAT less and be more selective. Eat more vegetables whether raw or cooked or in a green smoothie (OR ALL THREE). Be sure to eat a wide variety of veggies every day. Also include some fruit such as apples, oranges, bananas, pears, kiwi, red seedless grapes etc. in your diet. I would also learn how to steam green beans, kale and broccoli as a side dish. Make sure you are getting plenty of FIBER to slow down the conversion of carbohydrates and starch into sugar, thus helping to avoid after meal glucose spikes.

The best source of fiber I have found (FOR ME) is finely ground flax seed in my morning oatmeal, and eating more low calorie beans such as Lima beans, navy beans, black eye peas, green beans, baked beans etc. Try to include fiber rich foods with every meal. Let your green smoothies concentrate on celery (for lowering blood pressure) along with an apple or pear or naval orange and some green leafy vegetables such as romaine lettuce, kale, baby spinach, cucumbers, avocados, mangoes, red seedless grapes etc. If I have it on hand, I like to add a table spoon of Barley Powder or one of the many green super food mixes into the smoothie for extra benefit.

I take a full spectrum multi vitamin along with several other specific supplements. Among those I take a product called "CHOLESLO" which has lowered my triglycerides by 43% in just 71 days after starting on it. It is a natural product and NOT a drug and thus far no known or reported side effects. I have a separate blog post or two on this product alone along with my blood lipid profile numbers.

I am also looking hard at a supplement containing Transglucosidase enzyme which slows down the conversion of starchy foods into sugar thus reducing after meal spikes. I have a prior post all about how this enzyme works and where to buy it.

You also need to look at pycogenol, olive leaf extract, magnesium (preferable magnesium-L-Threonate), Co-enzyme Q10, 5000 IU of vitamin D3, fish or krill oil, Milk Thistle for your liver, Taurine capsules, vitamin C, calcium.

Around 75% of the population is believed to be deficient in magnesium alone. A good source for vitamin/mineral/herbal supplements is Puritan pride and also Swanson health products. I have ordered from BOTH

Disclaimer: I have no arrangement formal or informal with Puritan Pride or Swanson and derive NO remuneration from either. I also have NO formal training or education in the medical field. I am just a guy with type 2 Diabetes trying to beat the odds and I do a lot of research in that regard.

I have several posts on what supplements I take and why and if you look under the labels column it will help you find those posts.

Book Review Chapter 7 One Son's Quest For The Cause and Cure of Diabetes by Dr. James Chappell

Occasionally I like to dig around in my research library of articles and books I have read along with tapes I have listened to concerning health issues in general and Type 2 Diabetes in particular. This evening I came across the book mentioned in the blog post title concerning a son's search for cause and cure of his mother (Connie Chappell's diabetes).

In chapter 7 Dr. Chappell lists seven miracle elements to possibly cure diabetes used down through the centuries in different cultures. I will briefly outline them here:

First of all the medical profession refuses to recognize ANY cure for diabetes and last I looked the FDA has an official statement that, "ONLY drugs can cure disease", when in fact the millions of dollars spent on pharmaceutical drugs every year such as cholesterol lowering drugs including statins don't really CURE anything.

In any event, this post is NOT about the abuses and short comings of the FDA and pharmaceutical companies. It is about (7) elements used down through history to treat disease and diabetes in particular:

1. Cinnamon use dates back over 4000 years and has been used for the treatment of diarrhea, rheumatism, as an antibacterial digestive aid in relieving gas and bloating as well as certain menstrual disorders. The MOST RECENT use discovered by Dr, John Anderson of the USDA is for regulating GLUCOSE. Cinnamon contains a water-soluble polyphenol compound called MHCP in cinnamon that mimics insulin and activated cells receptor sites. One interesting fact about cinnamon discovered after the clinical trials that showed the effects of cinnamon lasted up to 20 days after people stopped taking it.

2. Bitter Melon which grows in tropical areas including parts of the Amazon, eastern Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Usage dates back over 5000 years in China. It has proven useful in expelling worms, intestinal gas, stimulating and promoting menstruation, as an antiviral for measles and hepatitis, however it is especially used for DIABETES OR "Sweet Urine". To date (book 1st edition, 2nd printing 2005)...close to 100 in vivo (human studies) have been demonstrated to show blood sugar-lowering effect of the bitter fruit.

3.Gymnema sylvestre is a woody climbing plant that grows in tropical forests of central and southern India. The plant when chewed actually blocks the sugar receptor sites, which explains the Hindi name gurmar or "sugar destroyer". It has been used in the treatment of diabetes for over 2000 years. The Harvard medical School in conjunction with the Natural Standard, an organization that produces scientifically based reviews of complementary and alternative medicine topics, STATES, "There is evidence to suggest that gymnema can lower blood sugar levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This is SIGNIFICANT.

4. NOPAL CACTUS - HAS BEEN USED IN MEXICO TO TREAT DIABETES, STOMACH PROBLEMS, FATIGUE, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, EASY BRUISING, PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT AND LIVER DISEASE FOR OVER 1000 YEARS. It has been thoroughly documented for over 500 years. Legend has it that the Aztecs used the "Prickly Pear" to control or actually cure diabetes (sweet urine).

5. American Ginseng is considered the KING of all herbs by the Asians. Whether American, Asian, or Russian/Siberian ginseng, all three are considered "adaptogens" and is useful in treatment of diabetes, fatigue, relieving stress and during convalescence. It also increases endurance and strength, helps to focus your thoughts, enhance memory, learning and behavior in patients with Alzheimer's and other dementia related ailments. The Archives of Internal Medicine (2000) reported by the University of Toronto, Canada that American ginseng produces a "Significant Reduction" in blood sugar in people with diabetes.

6. Fenugreek is used as a spice and a medicinal herb throughout the world. Chinese herbalists use it for kidney problems, male reproductive infections, constipation, atherosclerosis, high triglycerides, and high cholesterol. However the #1 reason fenugreek is used universally is for diabetes and sugar intolerance problems

7. Chromium - in the 1950's it was found that chromium was necessary for the maintenance of normal glucose tolerance. It has been studied that plasma chromium levels are at least 40% lower in 100% of diabetics. It is an essential trace mineral that helps maintain normal blood sugar levels.

There you have it. This brief summary of these (7) supplements will give you food for thought and I encourage you to look each one up individually for more information.

Reversing Brain Decay?

This month's Life Extension Magazine carries an in depth article about reducing brain decay as we age with the right supplements. It has been said that Alzheimer's disease is the second most feared disease, Cancer ranked #1.

Alzheimer's incidence increases exponentially as humans age. If we make it to 80-85 years Alzheimer's prevalence rises to a startling 25-30%.

What can one do about it? Some ideas mentioned are reducing inflammatory reactions in the brain with nutrients such as curcumin, and getting enough DHA from fish oil. In a remarkable discovery, the loss of synapses has been shown to occur early in the process of Alzheimer's and may trigger onset of the disease.

Life Extension recommends a highly absorb able form of magnesium to not only protest the integrity of delicate brain synapses but to also increase synaptic density to help reverse the structural loss of this critical brain component.

OKAY, what is a synapse? It is the connection that allows information  to pass from one neuron to the next. Your synapses control electrical impulses and release of neurotransmitters between neurons. These synapses are essential to neuronal function.

Magnesium plays a vital role in protecting and restoring synaptic density. This does not take place with any over the counter drug store vitamin isle magnesium. This highly absorb able form of magnesium is called (magnesium-L-threonate). A government study shows that 68% of Americans do not consume enough magnesium on a daily basis. The same study shows that 19% of Americans do not consume even half of the government's recommendation of daily intake. Interesting to me when I read this article is that there are over  300 biochemical reactions in the body which need magnesium to function correctly.

The article is somewhat controversial, however recommends supplementing with 2000 mg of magnesium-L-threonate each day.

I found the article very interesting and would suggest anyone wanting to further their education on valuable supplements should consider subscribing to Life Extension Magazine.

HERE is a final LINK to Life Extension on the importance of magnesium supplements and an internal link to their products. I am at the age where I know a few people who are suffering from Alzheimer's or memory loss of one sort or another. It certainly looks as though most of us could benefit from perhaps switching our magnesium supplement to the "Magnesium-L-Threonate" form of supplementation regardless of where you purchase it. Again I have NO connection with or any remuneration from the sale of these products.

EXCERPTS:

Enhancement of learning and memory by elevating brain magnesium.

Learning and memory are fundamental brain functions affected by dietary and environmental factors. Here, we show that increasing brain magnesium using a newly developed magnesium compound (magnesium-L-threonate, MgT) leads to the enhancement of learning abilities, working memory, and short- and long-term memory in rats. The pattern completion ability was also improved in aged rats. MgT-treated rats had higher density of synaptophysin-/synaptobrevin-positive puncta in DG and CA1 subregions of hippocampus that were correlated with memory improvement. Functionally, magnesium increased the number of functional presynaptic release sites, while it reduced their release probability. The resultant synaptic reconfiguration enabled selective enhancement of synaptic transmission for burst inputs. Coupled with concurrent upregulation of NR2B-containing NMDA receptors and its downstream signaling, synaptic plasticity induced by correlated inputs was enhanced. Our findings suggest that an increase in brain magnesium enhances both short-term synaptic facilitation and long-term potentiation and improves learning and memory functions.

Magnesium homeostasis and aging.

Aging is very often associated with magnesium (Mg) deficit. Total plasma magnesium concentrations are remarkably constant in healthy subjects throughout life, while total body Mg and Mg in the intracellular compartment tend to decrease with age. Dietary Mg deficiencies are common in the elderly population. Other frequent causes of Mg deficits in the elderly include reduced Mg intestinal absorption, reduced Mg bone stores, and excess urinary loss. Secondary Mg deficit in aging may result from different conditions and diseases often observed in the elderly (i.e. insulin resistance and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus) and drugs (i.e. use of hypermagnesuric diuretics). Chronic Mg deficits have been linked to an increased risk of numerous preclinical and clinical outcomes, mostly observed in the elderly population, including hypertension, stroke, atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, endothelial dysfunction, vascular remodeling, alterations in lipid metabolism, platelet aggregation/thrombosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, cardiovascular mortality, asthma, chronic fatigue, as well as depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Both aging and Mg deficiency have been associated to excessive production of oxygen-derived free radicals and low-grade inflammation. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are also present in several age-related diseases, such as many vascular and metabolic conditions, as well as frailty, muscle loss and sarcopenia, and altered immune responses, among others. Mg deficit associated to aging may be at least one of the pathophysiological links that may help to explain the interactions between inflammation and oxidative stress with the aging process and many age-related diseases.
Magnes Res. 2009 Dec;22(4):235-46

Magnesium and aging.

Over the past decades, the clinical relevance and biological significance of magnesium (Mg) have been documented. Deficiency in Mg, aside from having a negative impact on the energy production pathway required by mitochondria to generate ATP, also reduces the threshold antioxidant capacity of the aging organism and its resistance to free-radical damage. Mg also acts as an antioxidant against free radical damage of the mitochondria. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress have both been identified as pathogenic factors in aging and in several age-related diseases. Chronic Mg deficiency results in excessive production of oxygen-derived free radicals and low grade inflammation. Aging is very often associated with Mg inadequacy and with increased incidence of many chronic diseases, with muscle loss and sarcopenia, altered immune responses, and vascular and metabolic conditions, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and the cardiometabolic syndrome. The most common cause of Mg deficit in the elderly population is dietary Mg deficiency, although secondary Mg deficit in aging may also results from many different mechanisms. The aim of the present manuscript is to discuss the mechanisms and consequences of the modifications of Mg metabolism with age, the difficulties in the measurement of Mg status, and to review the current evidences suggesting that age-related chronic Mg deficits may be proposed as one of the physiopathological links that may help to explain the interactions between inflammation, oxidative stress with the aging process and many age-related diseases.

Metabolism and Type 2 Diabetes

Here is what NORMAL metabolism looks like:

  • We eat food
  • The food is digested and the carbohydrate portion is broken down into simple sugars much of which is glucose
  • Glucose (blood sugar) enters the blood, and insulin is produced by the pancreas to manage transport and distribution around the body
  • Insulin, acting like an usher, opens doors for glucose into different cells for a variety of purposes. Some of the glucose is converted to short term energy for immediate cell use, and some is stored as long term energy in the form of fat for later use.

In a diabetic this metabolic process collapses. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin, however the insulin does NOT do its job. This is called insulin resistance which simply put means that once the insulin starts giving orders to dispatch the blood sugar, the body does not pay attention. Th insulin therefore is rendered ineffective, and the blood sugar is NOT metabolized properly.

The end result of this is the complications listed in my last post. The status quo is to treat diabetes with modern drugs and in some cases surgery. The crux of the problem is that neither path treats the cause of the disease.

I have personally known Type 2 diabetics who feel that this is a disease that we can control with just adjusting the amount of insulin we take as opposed to adjusting the amount and type of food we eat. In my opinion this is a slippery slope at best. By refusing to make dietary or exercise changes in their lifestyle, they continue to gain weight which in turn makes them more inactive and it is a vicious cycle.

Knowing some of these folks personally, over time it takes more and more insulin to control blood sugar levels and it is a vicious cycle. I believe that one has to make up their mind to do something positive about reversing to whatever extent possible the ravages of the disease.

FIRST of all, you make up your mind you are not going to continue to live in a vicious cycle of chasing high and low blood glucose levels by first over eating and then taking more and more insulin.

You then meet with your doctor or a qualified nutritionist and work out a plan of eliminating all refined carbohydrates. You need to work out an exercise program consisting of both aerobics and weight resistance exercises combined with getting on an aggressive natural supplement program. You need to have your blood lipid profile done every 3 or 4 months. You will want to check your triglycerides, your cholesterol profile, your iodine levels, your vitamin D levels etc. if you are a male, you should also have your testosterone levels checked as well. On a daily basis, you need to be checking your own BG levels and keeping a log in addition to bringing your meter with you to your local doctor or diabetes clinic.

I would recommend that you partner up with a friend or acquaintance who is also diabetic and encourage each other to follow through on your exercise goals.

You should also take a hard look at the benefits of supplementing your diet with:

Chromium
Pycogenol
Alpha-lipoic acid
Calcium and Vitamin D3
Magnesium
Cinnamon
Aceytl L-Carnitine
Gingo Biloba
Fenugreek Seeds
Gymnema Sylvestre
Asian Ginseng
Fish Oil
When Protein
Zinc
MORE fiber

I have several BLOG POSTS under the label of supplements for Diabetics, and exercising for type 2 diabetes, along with articles on controlling your PH factor and the PH of your interstitial fluid. In other words, you need to spend some time studying diabetes on your own and not just blindly depending on your insulin pump or prescription drugs to prolong your life.

There is a LOT you can do by making the decision to want to get better. There is life after doughnuts and NO the world does not run on "Dunkin".

EXCERPT:

You wouldn't exactly call chlorella an overnight success. The health benefits of the green algae that grows in freshwater ponds in the Far East have so far been limited to those in the know, and its progress to British medicine cabinets has been slow. Since it became available in tablet form in the UK three years ago, it has achieved an almost cultish appreciation as a superfood, but now scientific research could catapult it into the mainstream.
New research from Japan suggests that this green algae could be effective in fighting major lifestyle diseases. It has been shown to reduce body-fat percentage and blood-glucose levels and help those suffering from Type 2 diabetes, obesity or heart disease. Its benefits include boosting energy, aiding digestion and fighting depression.

Here is a separate LINK to frequently Asked Questions concerning Diametrix:

http://www.diametrix.net/faq.html

EXCERPT:

DiaMetrix® Frequently Asked Questions
Is DiaMetrix® Effective?
The trial results speak for themselves.

The DiaMetrix formula and the trial results were introduced to over 6,000 health care practitioners attending a national medical conference. The response was amazing. Doctors are now the fastest growing segment recommending and using the DiaMetrix formula. Once again, numbers don't lie. The trial results are changing the way people approach their quest for optimal blood sugar support.
Can I take DiaMetrix® directly before a meal or do I have to wait 15-30 minutes?
DiaMetrix is formulated for rapid tablet disintegration once ingested. Taking DiaMetrix anywhere from 15 minutes before to just before eating is the ideal time.
Is DiaMetrix® OK for someone with Type 1 diabetes?
DiaMetrix is designed to attack the cause of Type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance), which is quite different than Type 1. However, many people with Type 1 diabetes eventually develop some insulin resistance just like Type 2's. In this case, DiaMetrix would be helpful for someone with Type 1. Remember, DiaMetrix will not substitute for the need of someone with Type 1 to take insulin regularly, but it may help prevent them from becoming insulin resistant.
How many tablets of DiaMetrix® should I take per day?
Take 2 tablets before each meal, up to 6 tablets per day.
NOTE: If you weigh over 200 lbs. take seven caplets per day.
When should I take DiaMetrix®?
DiaMetrix works best when taken before meals.
How long does it take for DiaMetrix® to work?
Studies show that DiaMetrix is fully effective within 30 days.
Is DiaMetrix® safe to use?
Yes. Toxicity testing on DiaMetrix has shown it to be safe when used as directed.
Q: Is DiaMetrix® a natural supplement?
Most active ingredients contained in DiaMetrix are natural and classified GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) by the FDA.
Is DiaMetrix® effective for Diabetic Neuropathy?
The two main factors that cause diabetic neuropathy are 1) neurovascular factors, leading to damage to the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to nerves, and 2) autoimmune factors that cause inflammation in nerves. DiaMetrix promotes normalized blood sugar levels and reduced levels of inflammation.
Have there been any credible studies done on DiaMetrix®?
Yes (2). A preliminary trial was conducted in 2006 with positive results. This led to a larger 100 person, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, human clinical study conducted in 2007. CLICK HERE to review the study results and conclusions. The Murine study was concluded in late 2010. CLICK HERE to review the study results and conclusions.
Do I need a prescription to buy DiaMetrix®?
No. DiaMetrix is classified as a dietary supplement. It does not require a prescription for purchase. If you are taking medications always consult with your doctor before using any herbal supplement.
Is the glycemic index really helpful to people?
Absolutely. You don’t need to eat a particular food to know what effect it will have on your blood insulin levels. This work has already been done on all major foods.
Some foods cause little or no insulin to be produced in your body. Others cause a great amount of insulin to be produced. People with type 2 diabetes cannot metabolize carbohydrates properly, so it is important to eliminate or severely limit any food that causes significant insulin production. The glycemic index labels every food according to the amount of insulin it causes to be produced in the body once it is eaten. Glycemic index numbers tell us what foods are good choices for people with type 2 diabetes and what foods are not good.
You can find much more information about the glycemic index on our web site under “research reports.”

(MY INPUT): I have NO affiliation with this product and do not receive any remuneration of any kind for sales of this product. That being said, I think it deserves a fair look and perhaps a discussion with your current diabetes doctor to see if you would benefit from it. I always tend to lean twoards natural supplements as opposed to prescription drugs. I think this one deserves some investigation on your part.

MORE Reasons To Take Vitamin D3 Supplementation

I personally take a 5000IU Vitamin D3 (Cholecaliferol) every day and pick up another 1000IU from a multi vitamin. I am posting a LINK from LIFE EXTENSION to some additional information on Nursing Home patients and the possibility of early death from a lack of Vitamin D.

http://www.lef.org/newsletter/2012/0309_Vitamin-D-Deficiency-Among-Nursing-Home-Residents.htm?utm_source=eNewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Article&utm_content=Button&utm_campaign=2012Wk10-1&l=0#article

EXCERPT:

Widespread vitamin D deficiency among nursing home residents linked to earlier death; strategies to improve vitamin D status "urgently needed"

Widespread vitamin D deficiency among nursing home residents linked to earlier death; strategies to improve vitamin D status "urgently needed"
Friday, March 9, 2012. A study of nursing home residents described in an article scheduled for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reveals a link between being deficient in vitamin D and having a greater risk of dying over more than two years of follow up. While reduced vitamin D levels have been associated with an increased risk of premature mortality in the general population, the association in an institutionalized population has not been well explored.
The study included 961 nursing home residents residing in Austria whose age was greater than 70 years. Participants' serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels averaged 17.5 nanomoles per liter, and 92.8 percent of the subjects had levels lower than the recommended 50 nanomoles per liter.
Over an average follow-up of 27 months, 284 deaths occurred. For subjects whose vitamin D level was among the lowest 25 percent of participants at less than 14 nanomoles per liter, the risk of dying was 49 percent greater than those whose level was highest at over 25.5 nanomoles per liter. Adjustment for various factors failed to significantly modify the association. "We believe that our findings, together with previous data on institutionalized elderly, strongly point to the need for immediate action to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency in these patients," the authors write. "Considering the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency it seems reasonable to initiate vitamin D supplementation (at least 800 IU per day) even without previous 25-hydroxyvitamin D testing in such individuals."
"Our findings show that the vast majority of nursing home residents are severely vitamin D deficient and those with the lowest vitamin D levels are at high risk of mortality," commented lead author Stefan Pilz, MD, of the Medical University of Graz, Austria.
"Vitamin D supplementation in these patients can exert significant benefits on clinically relevant outcomes such as fractures," he added. "In light of our findings, and the existing literature on adverse effects of vitamin D deficiency, there exists now an urgent need for effective strategies to improve vitamin D status in older institutionalized patients."

(MY INPUT):

Everything I have read for the past few years indicate that most of us are deficient in Vitamin D, and I imagine that the elderly are at greater risk. I for ONE have been taking 5000 mg of Vitamin D3 on average now for perhaps 5 years or more.

The following LINK concerns itself with low Vitamin D levels and SUDDEN cardiac death.

EXCERPT:

The study evaluated 2,312 men and women who were free of cardiovascular disease upon enrollment in the Cardiovascular Health Study, which studied the risk of the disease in older individuals. Blood samples stored between 1992 and 1993 were analyzed for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone levels. Participants were followed for a median of 14 years, during which 73 sudden cardiac deaths occurred.
While only two sudden cardiac deaths per 1000 occurred among those whose 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were at least 20 nanograms per milliliter, the amount doubled in those whose levels were lower. Similarly, high parathyroid levels of 65 picograms per milliliter or more were associated with twice the number of SCDs compared to lower levels. For the 11.7 percent who had low vitamin D and high parathyroid levels, the risk of sudden cardiac death was more than twice that of subjects with normal levels.

(MY INPUT):

While no single test or study or report is the final word on Vitamin D, I submit that there is considerable evidence that most of us do not get enough Vitamin D and there are health consequences because of it.

PLEASE check it out for yourself, and take a look at this last LINK from an article by Dr. David Williams:

http://www.drdavidwilliams.com/importance-vitamin-d

Dr. Williams was my first clue that most of us do not get enough Vitamin D3 and I started taking it because of his newsletter. You will find his article interesting:

(EXCERPT):

How to prevent a vitamin D deficiency

Numerous studies and the epidemiological trends over recent years support the theory that people need significantly more vitamin D than has been commonly accepted. A University of Toronto study involving 796 women between the ages of 18 and 35 showed that the generally recommended amounts of vitamin D for women are too low to offer any benefit. According to Reinhold Vieth and his colleagues, any amount of daily vitamin D intake under 800 IU wasn’t enough to prevent a vitamin D deficiency.
Despite this information and more, the US Food and Nutrition board for osteoporosis-related matters still recommends only 400 IU per day for women under the age of 50.
The evidence for increased Vitamin D continues to grow, but, for some reason, it also continues to be ignored. You already know the important role it plays in building and maintaining a strong immune system, and vitamin D levels also are linked to more than just proper bone growth and strength. Some of the most common health ailments today can be directly linked to inadequate vitamin D levels.

Heart Disease and Diabetes

Heart disease continues to reign as the number-one killer in this country. Although dozens of factors are involved in developing heart disease, excess sugar consumption and the inability to regulate blood sugar levels properly are undoubtedly two of the major contributing factors. Studies have now shown that low vitamin D levels decrease insulin levels and increase insulin resistance, both of which are associated with diabetes and subsequent cardiovascular problems.
I’ve also reported how the incidence of diabetes in children has been skyrocketing over the last couple of decades. Lower vitamin D levels have now been found to be one of the contributing factors.

(MY INPUT): PLEASE do your own research as "Only You Can Prevent Forrest Fires" as Smokey Bear used to say when I was a kid.

Inflamation, Type 2 Diabetes And Magnesium Deficiency

Is there a LINK between inflammation caused by magnesium deficiency and possible mercury contamination found in HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP? There is evidence that this may be at least part of the problem.

http://diabetic.imva.info/index.php/treatments/diabetes-and-inflamation/

EXCERPTS:

Diabetes and Inflammation

New Paradigms in Diabetic Care also examines inflammation and how magnesium is the medical weapon of choice to cut the inflammatory reaction at its source.”If we can block or disarm this macrophage inflammatory pathway in humans, we could interrupt the cascade that leads to insulin resistance and diabetes,” said Jerrold Olefsky, Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs.
USCD researchers proved in 2007 that insulin resistance can be disassociated from the increase in body fat associated with obesity and that inflammation provoked by immune cells called macrophages leads to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. [1] Magnesium deficiency is pro-inflammatory. Magnesium deficiency induces insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, endothelial activation and prothrombic changes in combination with the upregulation of markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.[2]
High fructose consumption combined with low dietary magnesium intake can increase the incidence of the metabolic syndrome by inducing inflammation because the corn syrup is contaminated with mercury. Because magnesium acts as a natural calcium antagonist, the molecular basis for the inflammatory response is probably the result of a buildup of the intracellular calcium concentration.
Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, according to a new study. Mercury was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient. HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods. A high consumer can take in about 20 teaspoons of HFCS per day. The use of mercury-contaminated caustic soda in the production of HFCS is common.[3]

HOW MUCH magnesium is enough?

See the link listed below and excerpts:

http://www.diabetesexplained.com/magnesium-and-diabetes.html

EXCERPTS:

How much magnesium is enough?
The present RDA (recommended dietary allowance) is as follows:-
1-3years olds need 80mg (milligrams).
4-8 year olds need 130mg.
9-13 year olds need 240mg.
14-18 year olds require the most, 410mg for males and 360mg for females.
Adults need 400-420 mg for males and 310-320 mg for women.
Studies are beginning to show up the fact that many of us are not getting enough dietary magnesium. In fact in the US the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine (after great deliberation & research) say an estimated 50% to 85% of the U.S. population is receiving inadequate magnesium intake.
Why are we so lacking in magnesium?
This can be due to a number of factors;-
1. Diet.
One needs to look at the foods that contain the most magnesium and then ask yourself how much of these you eat.
Magnesium is found in greatest quantities in:-
Whole grains such as those used in bread, porridges (like maize meal and Maltabella, better known to our South African readers) and brown rice.
Legumes - lentils, beans, peas and Soya bean products.
Nuts and seeds. Pumpkin seeds have 402mg/100g and cashews have 255mg/100g.
Dark green vegetables - spinach (for eg. 1/2 cup of boiled spinach contains 65mg), broccoli, dark green lettuce (not the common Iceberg lettuce) and cabbage.
Avocado - 1/2 cup has 35mg.
Squash.
Milk - 1 cup whole milk has 24mg.
Chocolate - black chocolate has as much as 228mg/100g. Now how is that as an excuse to indulge?!!!

MY INPUT: Get OFF anything and everything with high fructose corn syrup in it and eat more food rich in magnesium and possibly take a supplement.

The Eyes Have It - Smoothies For The Eyes

I came across a recipe for a smoothie that has benefits for the eyes. Again I have a Vita Mixer and would not trade it for anything on the market, however you can use a high speed blender for this one.

  • 1 Banana
  • 1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries (they are expensive now as the season is over, so go ahead and use frozen if you wish)
  • 1 handful green grapes
  • 1 small fennel / greens and bulb
  • 1 handful spinach
  • Water and ice to blend
Both the banana and the blueberries have nutrients for your retina and protection from glaucoma. Grapes and spinach can help prevent macular degeneration. Fennel was used by the Romans and believed to help night vision, and prevent cataracts.

As diabetics we need to be taking in nutrients each and every day to help protect our eyes. See my PREVIOUS POST on lutein, bilberry, asaxanthin and pycnogenol for eye health. Visit your local health food store, or try Swanson or Puritan Pride to obtain these supplements.

What About Lecithin For Heart Health?

I recently ran out of my Lecithin supplement. I have taken it for years and started taking it on advice from Dr. David Williams. He has a website which I will post a link to, particularly on the subject of lecithin. I remember getting interested in lecithin and Dr. William's site years ago when I was put on (2) medications that gave me several unwanted side effects. The "Deadly Duo", as I  referred to them were LIPITOR and TRICOR.

I was put on these two drugs since at the time my triglycerides and overall cholesterol levels were out of whack along with my LDL/HDL ratio. The statin drug Lipitor has dangerous side effects all by itself, however when prescribed along with TRICOR, it can be a nightmare.

Following are some links to the dangers of Statin drugs:

LINK to Dangers Of Statin Drugs

LINK To Lipitor and Tricor Side Effects Including Rhabdomyolysis

(My Input)

This post was about LECITHIN, not drugs, however the reason I started on lecithin was research that convinced me the dangerous side effects of Statin drugs far outweighed their usefulness. I was also experiencing early signs of muscle problems and after reading some of the horror stories of people in wheel chairs and having a severe muscle disease called (Rhabdomyolysis), I took myself off the drugs. If you are on Statins I would suggest you talk to your doctor about side effects and muscle and kidney disease.

In any event, the reason I started taking lecithin is because I learned that Statins do absolutely NOTHING for any plaque or blockage or build up already in your arteries. Lecithin apparently does play a part. The medical community at large does not buy that premise and I personally believe it is because it is difficult to patent lecithin and make it into a drug, therefore there is NO profit in it for pharmaceutical companies. NO profit = No interest./ MY personal opinion and NOT cold hard fact etched into stone.

I went into the hospital about a year and 1/2 ago for three days. I had a LOT of tests run, including but not limited to carotid artery scans, echo cardiogram of the heart, EKG's, blood tests, brain scans etc. All of this was the result of a single vasovagal episode. The good news is that they could not detect any blockage in my arteries, my heart was fine, valves opening and closing properly, EKG was fine etc.

I personally think the lack of any detectable blockage in my arteries was the result of taking lecithin supplements for years.  Following are some links to the use of LECITHIN for heart health:

LINK to Lecithin Benefits

LINK to More On Benefits Of lecithin

There is some controversy over whether or not Lecithin is really effective in keeping one's arteries clear. Based on my family tree and heredity, heart disease runs in the family. For me to have reached age 63 and get a report of 3 days testing that my arteries are clear is great news for me. I will CONTINUE to go the natural route whenever and where ever I can as opposed to taking prescription drugs.

More on Vitamin D3

I just keep coming across articles and research on the importance of Vitamin D3 in the diet whether you are a diabetic or not. How exactly does it work? and why is it believed most of us are deficient in vitamin D3?

Some of the benefits of Vitamin D3:

  • Supports immune system
  • Supports a healthy heart and cardiovascular system
  • Promotes healthy energy levels and endurance
  • Promotes well being
  • Supports cognitive function and a healthy brain
Vitamin D is the only vitamin that our bodies can manufacture from exposure to sunlight. Lifestyles have changed over the last few decades with less outdoor type jobs and therefore less exposure to sunlight. Many or most of us spend too much time indoors and there is also an emphasis on using sunscreens during any outdoor exposure because of the risk skin cancer.

D3 is a vitamin derived from 7-dehyrocholesterol, however it acquires a hormone like action when converted to1.25-dilhydroxy or calcitriol by the liver and kidneys. As a hormone calcitriol controls, phosphorus, calcium, bone metabolism along with neuromuscular function.

The RDA of Vitamin D is set at very low levels and apparently came into being from what I have read to prevent a very painful bone disease called (osteomalacia) and rickets. The RDA (recommended daily amount) or RDI recommended daily intake is set at between 400-600 IU. Too low a dose of vitamin D3 has also been implicated in symptoms such as back pain, depression, insulin resistance , cancer, and immunity disorders.

Some newer studies have elevated the upper intake limits on vitamin D3 to 10,000UI daily.  I am NOT a doctor and NOT giving medical advice, however I have been taking 5000IU of vitamin D3 for about 5 years now and probably get another 1000-1500IU in my food intake and multi-vitamin supplement.

Following are links I have found to have additional information concerning vitamin D3 supplementation:

Nutrients For Your Eyes / You Are Only Issued ONE Set For Life

As diabetics, we need to take steps to make sure we are getting nutrients aimed specifically at eye health. Here is a partial list of nutrients you NEED to make sure you are getting every day in your diet regimen.

A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools. -
Spanish Proverb

Eat a variety of green, yellow, red and orange fruits and vegetables. 99% of us do NOT get enough FRESH raw fruits and vegetables. You should eat a large raw salad each and every day. Think in terms of romaine lettuce (better for you than Iceberg lettuce), red, green, yellow and orange peppers, zucchini and summer squash, carrots, celery, radishes, cauliflower, broccoli, garbanzo beans, kale, red seedless grapes, green leafy spinach, fresh tomatoes etc. / Use a salad dressing with extra virgin olive oil

Take a lutein, bilberry, supplement every day /Go to the local health food store and look for a astaxanthin supplement. Astaxanthin has been called the most powerful carotenoid antioxidant in the world as it is 65X more powerful than Vitamin C, 54X more than beta-carotene and 14X more than vitamin E. Astaxanthin can be purchased from Dr. Mercola's website under supplements or at your local health food store for around $20 for a 30 day supply / LOOK FOR 4mg doseage capsules. (IT is reported that people who have high levels of these nutrients have LOWER incidents of cataracts, and macular degeneration

The trace mineral ZINC is also needed for eye health

Pine bark extract also apparently plays a role - visit your local health food store. (SOLD as pycnogenol)

You might consider taking a KELP supplement to ensure you are getting enough trace mineral in the proper amounts and balance

Spirulina and Chlorella / TWO Super Foods For Diabetes

Can you think of (2) SUPER Foods you should be eating every day?

Here are some choices: Check the right box and improve your health

(  ) Double cheeseburger deluxe washed down by super sized ice cold Pepsi

(  ) 1/2 of a large deluxe pizza with everything on it including extra cheese and extra large regular Coke

(  ) 2 Whoppers on the buy one (get one free lunch special) along with A super sized chocolate shake

( X ) Spirulina and Chlorella supplements along with a large raw salad and a glass of water with a teaspoon of Bragg's apple cider vinegar

Test results.....................IF you picked the 4th one, you get an A in this nutrition test.

Let's take a look at why.

Spirulina has been reported to have:

  • 2300% more iron than spinach
  • 3900% more beta carotene than carrots
  • 300% more calcium than whole milk
  • 375% more protein than tofu / 15X more protein than steak and easier to digest
  • 31 times the phytonutrients of blueberries and 60X that of spinach
  • Spirulina is 65-71% complete protein
BOTH Spirulina and chlorella are microscopic green plants that grown in fresh water. They have been around for a while (approximately 3.5 billion years). They are some of the simplest life forms on the planet and yet hold the greatest potential for health, and healing and even feeding the world's masses.

Both plants contain an astonishing mix of power elements including vitamins, macro-minerals, trace minerals, essential fatty acids, protein, nucleic acids (the stuff RNA and DNA are made of), chlorophyll and a whole bunch of phytochemicals and are reputed to contain EVERY NUTRIENT required by the human body.

Chlorella is said to be the DETOXIFIER AND Spirulina  helps build muscles and restore energy.

Life expectancy in Japan for example is one of the highest in the world. Men have an average lifespan of 79 years and women 85 years. The Japenese diet is high in seafood, seaweed, buckwheat noodles, tofu, mushrooms, vegetables and MICRO GREEN PLANTS like spirulina and chlorella.

They are both also great for your EYES which is an added benefit for diabetics. Type 2 diabetics are prone to dry eyes, spots, floaters, loss of peripheral vision, decreased color vision and glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. Chlorella is an excellent source of LUTEIN which has been demonstrated to help prevent the incidence of age related cataracts in adults. (Based on research conducted at the University of Wisconsin's department of Nutritional Sciences).

Chlorella has also been shown to help normalize blood sugar in cases of hypoglycemia (blood sugar too low) and hyperglycemia (blood sugar too high) and also shown promise in helping to lower blood pressure.

Both foods help to combat an over acidic PH balance in your body (see interstitial fluid).

Ezekiel 47:12
Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing."

Daniel 1:12-17
"Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13) Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see." 14 ) So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. 15) At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16) So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead. 17) To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

Benefits Of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

I have been wanting to do a post on the benefits of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil for some time now. It seems to me that the ADA and the medical community at large are always talking about watching one's fat intake, especially saturated fat. At the same time they do not  seem to be much if any differentiation between HEALTHY fats (vs.) Unhealthy fats.

I have several posts talking about healthy fats such as Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Extra Virgin coconut Oil, cold pressed Flax Seed Oil and even REAL butter. I did a post recently on the history of UNHEALTHY FATS such as hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils.

Let's look at Extra Virgin coconut Oil. My first exposure to this was Jordan Rubin's book entitled, "The Maker's Diet" I would strongly suggest you purchase his book and visit the Garden Of Life Website. Their products are now offered by "The Vitamin Shoppe" amongst several other outlets.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been used as a cooking oil for thousands of years, and is still a staple in the diets of many people living in tropical areas today. It was once popular here in the United States as well, until shortages of imported oils during WW II created the need to promote local oils like soybean and corn oil. Soon, polyunsaturated fats became the norm in this country; and with it came a rise in obesity, higher cholesterol levels, and degenerative diseases related to aging.
Coconut oil has been shown to reduce the symptoms of digestive disorders, support overall immune functions, and to help prevent bacterial, viral and fungal infections. People who consistently use coconut oil, report changes in their ability to go without eating for several hours without experiencing the effects of hypoglycemia.

A study conducted in Yucatan where coconut oil is a staple, showed that metabolic rates of people living there were 25% higher than in comparable test subjects living in the United States. Increased metabolic rate is a key to healthy weight management and could account for the leanness of people living in areas where coconut oil is consumed on a daily basis. The study further observed that local women displayed none of the symptoms commonly associated with menopause.

Recent Testimonial from a Satisfied Customer

I was having stiffness in my hands and joint pain from arthritis and could hardly move them. I used so many herbs and supplements but nothing worked. So I tried Garden of Life's Coconut Oil by accident for my hypothyroidism. Not only did it warm me up and help me to feel more energetic but in 1-2 days I was able to move my hands freely without pain!!!

Then I took a break using it and started up again when I got bad pain in both of my knees I could barely walk. It saved me and I will never stop using it again!

Thank you Jordan Rubin!

Mary G.

Good Fat vs Bad Fat

Early researchers failed to distinguish between saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats. They assumed at the time, that all fats (including coconut oil) were unhealthy because they raised serum cholesterol levels. But, in revisiting those studies, researchers found that hydrogenated (refined) coconut oil had been used. All hydrogenated oils produce higher serum cholesterol levels, and contribute to greater oxidation and free radicals in the body. In fact, further research has shown that excess amounts of trans-fatty acids (found in hydrogenated vegetable oils) increase the risk of degenerative diseases and other age-related maladies.
Studies have shown that the amount of unsaturated oil in the diet strongly affects the rate at which wrinkled skin develops. Taken internally and used topically, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is effective at slowing down that process.
Garden of Life's Extra Virgin Coconut Oil has tremendous antiviral properties. Lauric Acid makes up 50 to 55 percent of the medium-chain fatty acids in Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. In the body lauric acid converts into monolaurin, a compound which is adept at fighting viral pathogens, and is also present in large quantities in breast milk, where it protects infants from viral, bacterial and parasitic infections.

(my input) Jordan Rubin is NOT the only distributor of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, however after reading a couple of his books and learning his own struggle to come back to vibrant health after almost dying of Chron's disease, I TRUST HIM, and his coconut oil is FREE from hydrogenated oils and taste good to boot. I would encourage you to read his books and try his products. AGAIN, I have NO financial interest or benefit derived from the sale of any of his books or products.

"And then it hit me," she said. "Why don't we just try coconut oil as a dietary supplement? What have we got to lose? If the MCT oil in it worked for them, why couldn't it work for us?"
Trying out coconut oil and testing result
On the drive home, she stopped at a health food store and bought a jar of nonhydrogenated, extra-virgin coconut oil. The experimental medication's patent application was complete with dosage information, and she did some quick math, converting the measurements.
The next morning she stirred two tablespoons of coconut oil into her husband's oatmeal, and she tried it in hers, too.
On the way down to the second screening in Tampa, Dr. Newport quizzed her husband, asking him the day, month and year.
"I prayed harder than I'd ever prayed in my life," she said.
Her prayers were answered. Steve scored an 18 on the exam, the highest he'd scored for more than a year and four points higher than the previous day.
"It was like the oil kicked in and he could think clearly again," Dr. Newport said. "We were ecstatic."
Newport was accepted into the trial but more importantly, the coconut oil he'd ingested seemed to "lift the fog." He began taking coconut oil every day, and by the fifth day, there was a tremendous improvement.
"He would face the day bubbly, more like his old self," his wife said.
More than five months later, his tremors have subsided, the visual disturbances that prevented him from reading have disappeared, and he has become more social and interested in those around him.
Nothing can repair the brain damage he has sustained as a consequence of Alzheimer's disease, and there is no cure. But it appears the oil is helping, Dr. Newport said.

Vitamin D3 - NEW Research And Suggested Daily Intake

I have been taking Vitamin D3 for some time now, usually in the form of a single capsule for 5000IU per day. Current research indicates that even higher doses can be very beneficial and that what time of day you take your Vitamin D3 also makes a difference in the absorption rate.

LINK to Longevity and Vitamin D3 / Studies

Excerpt:

The new vitamin D review comes from Philippe Autier, MD, and Sara Gandini, PhD.
Autier works for the International Agency of Research on Cancer in Lyon, France. Gandini works for the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy.
Together, they analyzed the results of 18 vitamin D studies that included mortality rates.
More than 57,000 adults in the U.S., U.K., and Europe participated in the studies. Most of them were "frail" elders with low blood levels of vitamin D, write Autier and Gandini.
Participants were typically assigned to take vitamin D supplements or a placebo containing no vitamin D.
Their daily vitamin D doses ranged from 300 to 2,000 international units (IU), averaging 528 IU per day, in the form of ergocalciferol (vitamin D-2) or cholecalciferol (vitamin D-3).
Each study was designed differently, but on average, participants were followed for 5.7 years. During that time, 4,777 participants died of any cause.
People taking vitamin D were 7% less likely to die during the studies. The precise reason for their lower death rate isn't clear, and the reviewers aren't recommending a specific vitamin D dose.
An editorial published with the study recommends more research on vitamin D's benefits.

LINK to Vitamin D3 Supplementation and General Health

EXCERPT:

Just consider these recent studies:
  • At Boston University, after people with high blood pressure were exposed to UVA and UVB rays for three months, their vitamin D levels increased by more than 100% -- and more impressively, their high blood pressure normalized. "We've followed them now for nine months, and their hypertension continues to be in remission," says Holick, professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics at Boston University. One theory about how vitamin D reduces blood pressure: It decreases the production of a hormone called renin, which is believed to play a role in hypertension.
  • In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in December 2003, of more than 3,000 veterans (ages 50 to 75) at 13 Veterans Affairs medical centers, those who consumed more than 645 IU of vitamin D a day along with more than 4 grams per day of cereal fiber had a 40% reduction in their risk of developing precancerous colon polyps.
  • In a report in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in February 2004, researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland showed that elderly women who took a vitamin D supplement plus calcium for three months reduced their risk of falling by 49% compared with consuming calcium alone. Those women who had fallen repeatedly in the past seemed to gain the most benefit from vitamin D.
  • A study in the Jan. 13, 2004 issue of Neurology indicated that women who get doses of vitamin D that are typically found in daily multivitamin supplements -- of at least 400 international units -- are 40% less likely to develop multiple sclerosis compared with those not taking over-the-counter supplements.

Vitamin D: Vital Role in Your Health

Vitamin D deficiency can be harmful -- in fact, there are real benefits to increasing your Vitamin D.

Your D-Day Plan of Attack

Many vitamin D researchers are convinced the government's recommendations for adequate vitamin D intake are far below what your body really needs. Those guidelines call for 200 IU a day up to the age of 50, 400 IU from 51 to 70, and 600 IU over age 70. (SOME ARE RECOMMENDING 5000iu AS A MINIMUM AND SOME ADVOCATE 8000 TO 10,000 D3 IU DAILY)
But, says Holick, studies show that to achieve blood levels of vitamin D that can protect you against chronic diseases, you need an optimal dose of 1,000 IU of vitamin D a day. The vitamin is well absorbed from foods like fortified milk and from vitamin pills, whether taken alone or in combination with other foods.
So how can you get enough of this overlooked vitamin? Most foods aren't filled to the brim with vitamin D -- far from it. You can get 425 IU in a 3-ounce serving of salmon, and 270 IU in 3.5 ounces of canned sardines. But most foods provide much more modest amounts of vitamin D, from egg yolks (25 IU per egg) to cheddar cheese (2.8 IU per ounce).
"You'll get 200 IUs of vitamin D by drinking two glasses of fortified milk," says Sandon, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. But at age 70, even reaching the government's recommended level of 600 IU from diet alone can be a challenge. "These people are probably not drinking six glasses of milk a day for various reasons, including a higher incidence of lactose intolerance in the elderly," she tells WebMD.
"We need more food fortification [with] vitamin D," says Susan Sullivan, DSc, RD, assistant professor in the department of food science and human nutrition at the University of Maine. "We need to make it easier for people to meet their vitamin D requirements through the food supply."
Some of that fortification is already happening. In addition to milk, a growing number of food manufacturers are adding vitamin D to yogurt, breakfast cereal, margarine, and orange juice. A cup of fortified orange juice, for example, contains 100 IU of vitamin D.

May 7, 2010 -- Taking your vitamin D supplement with the largest meal of the day may boost its absorption substantially, according to a new study.
Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic instructed 17 men and women, average age 64, whose blood levels of vitamin D were borderline insufficient despite taking supplements, to take their supplements with the largest meal of the day.
After two or three months, the study participants had about a 50% increase in blood levels of the vitamin, regardless of the dose they took.
Researchers Guy B. Mulligan, MD, and Angelo Licata, MD, had noticed that patients typically report taking the supplement either on an empty stomach or with a light meal.
Because the vitamin is fat-soluble, the researchers speculated that taking it with a big meal would improve absorption.
Vitamin D is crucial not only to maintain bone strength, but research now suggests it plays a role in immune system problems, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
The researchers measured blood levels of the vitamin at the start of the study and two or three months later. Participants took a range of doses, and the researchers divided them into three groups: less than 50,000 IU a week, 50,000 IU, and more than 50,000 IU. The daily doses ranged from 1,000 IU to 50,000 IU.
A dose of 400 IU is termed adequate for people 51-70, and 600 IU for people 71 and older, as set by the Institute of Medicine, but some experts believe much more is needed, especially in older adults. The current upper tolerable level is set at 2,000 IU daily. The recommendations are under review and an update is expected this month.
At the study start, the average blood level of the form of vitamin D measured, 25(OH)D, was 30.5 nanograms per milliliter. By the end, it was 47.2 ng/mL.  A level of 15 and higher is termed adequate by the Institute of Medicine for healthy people, but the study participants had a range of health problems, such as osteoporosis and thyroid problems.
Few foods contain vitamin D naturally, and some foods are fortified with it. Vitamin D synthesis is also triggered when the body is exposed to sunlight.
