More Information On IODINE

Here are some useful links and comments to add to your research on supplementing with iodine.

MY own view is to TEST iodine levels FIRST and then proceed with caution. That being said it appears that the 150mcg (micrograms) dose age is inadequate for best health results. I have been taking 2X to 3X that now for about 4 months and have a Joslin Clinic appt coming up this week. My last iodine test indicated mine was (42) our of a normal reading of 40-92 meaning I was in the LOW normal range. I am going to see if I can have it tested again and report the results here.

(NaturalNews) Chances are you have been hearing conflicting messages: "Stock up on iodine"; "Don't worry about it; you won't need it"; "It's dangerous and can cause further problems"; "It will protect you from radioactive fallout." It leaves you wondering what to believe.

And there is reason for such confusion and even distrust. Nuclear mishaps over the last few decades have shown government's response to such measures being questionable at best. One might say the walking the line between preventing public chaos and a national health incidence has become too thin.

Iodine is probably one of the most misunderstood nutrients of our time; although as the realization of its importance for whole body health grows, the volume of understanding is becoming much greater. When people think of iodine, they think of the thyroid gland because it accounts for approximately 60% of thyroid hormone production. This has led the CDC to create its daily recommendation of iodine to be just 150 mcg (micrograms) for the average adult for general thyroid health, which does not take into account the need in other areas of the body.

Iodine plays a major role in the health and wellness of the entire body. Aside from preventing thyroid goiters and nodules, iodine has proven to be critical for other iodine dependent tissues such as the breasts, prostate, reproductive organs, digestive tract and essentially all tissues of the body exposed to microbes and pathogens. This is partially due to iodine's antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic and antiviral effects. This has led to practitioners making recommendations of daily iodine considerably higher than the current 150 mcg daily.

Many of the recommendations of how much iodine one should take have been distilled from studying cultures that eat iodine rich foods such as sea vegetables including dulse and kelp. It has been found that cultures such as the Japanese, where these foods are a regular staple to their diet, have lower incidences of breast and prostate cancer, as well as cardiovascular disease.

The Japanese culture consumes at conservative estimates ten times more iodine than the United States averaging in between 1 1/2 mg to 6 mg daily, with some estimates going as high as 13 mg daily. So does this mean that we should be taking daily dosages in these higher amounts?


This recent nuclear scare should serve as a wake-up call. The iodine you consume in foods and supplements gets released from the body in 24 to 48 hours, which means daily consumption or supplementation of iodine is critical for maintaining iodine dependent health.

In recent days we have seen the need for iodine sway from general whole body health to protection from nuclear radiation. In this case iodine is used as a blocker; where from taking a mega dose of potassium iodide, the thyroid gland becomes saturated leaving no room for radioactive iodine to take hold. This is not a dose that someone should randomly consume if there is no real threat of radioactive exposure.

Taking too much iodine can have its consequences and may not be free of side-effects. Too much iodine can send someone in the state of hyperthyroidism or even a thyroid storm leading to headaches, nausea, a racing heart, and a very high fever, so it is important to take such extreme doses only under situations where there is a clear need.

Iodized salt hasn't eliminated iodine deficiency disorders in the U.S. Recent studies by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey indicate low levels in more than 50% of the population (accounting for all demographic categories including ethnicity, region, economic status, race, and population density).

Adequate iodine levels are crucial for all aspects of health and well-being; in fact, in generations past, physicians routinely used iodine in medical practice. The typical dose was 1 gram of potassium iodide (KI), containing 770 mg of iodine, which far exceeds the current U.S. RDA of 150 mcg.

IODINE supplementation/ TEST first/THEN go slowly

In this post, I want to say that I think that most of us need more iodine than we are getting from food. At the same time, one has to be aware of "IF a little is good, then a lot is better syndrome".

I strongly recommend having your iodine levels tested FIRST and then work with a doctor or endocrinologist and or nutritionist to work out a program. It is not as easy as just buying some form of iodine supplementation and not doing any homework first. Iodine also works better with other nutrients such as magnesium, selenium etc. and you need to do some homework first. I have several posts on iodine supplementation already and lots of LINKS for you to look up for yourself.

EXPOSE yourself to information FIRST and then proceed with caution and your doctor's input. I did my homework and had my blood tested first. My iodine level is in the LOW normal range at 42 with the normal range being 40 to 92.

I have an appointment with my diabetes doctor this Friday and in the interim I am taking (2) Nature's Way KELP caps per day (equaling 800mcg of iodine) along with eating (1) Brazil nut per day for selenium and I am going to switch to a liquid calcium/magnesium supplement and then have my iodine levels checked each time I have blood work done and keep records on how I feel, what has improved (Blood glucose as an example), what got worse? any new symptoms? list of improvements, energy level? etc. etc.). You need to READ, READ, READ, and talk to the professionals, educate yourself and then make the best decisions you can about your plan of action with a qualified professional's advice.

Iodine Supplements – Dangers of Too Much Iodine

Both iodine and iodide are required for health. Many debilitating health problems arise when our bodies become deficient of these two trace minerals but what happens to us when we take too much?
To understand the dangers of iodine and iodide it’s important to first understand a little thyroid physiology and biochemistry. I promise to make this very easy to understand.
The hormone TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) does just what it says, it stimulates the thyroid to make its hormones.
The most common reason for TSH to increase is when thyroid hormones decline in the blood.
But there’s another reason for TSH to increase and this is where the danger lies. And why would too much TSH be dangerous?
Again, TSH stimulates thyroid cells to make their hormones, but how?
There are a couple of ways but I’ll focus on just one of them.
All thyroid hormones have iodine attached to them. Without iodine thyroid cells can’t make their hormones. But thyroid cells do not absorb iodine, they absorb iodide and once it’s inside it must be changed into iodine. And how is iodide changed into iodine inside thyroid cells?
Now, this is amazing… thyroid cells make hydrogen peroxide which is used to change iodide into iodine. And what stimulates thyroid cells to make more hydrogen peroxide to create more iodine to create more thyroid hormones?
TSH.
The danger then is if TSH remains high and continues to stimulate more and more hydrogen peroxide production inside thyroid cells. Because if this goes on for awhile these thyroid cells will eventually become inflamed from too much hydrogen peroxide leading to their destruction (apoptosis).
You all know about hydrogen peroxide. It’s an antiseptic and is applied to wounds to burn or oxidize bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide also activates our tiny white blood cells and these help to clean up tissue debris and the dead bacteria.
So when TSH has been elevated for an extended period of time and some thyroid cells break apart this releases what’s inside these cells including the hydrogen peroxide. This triggers the white cells to come to the rescue and, you guessed it, we have an autoimmune condition of the thyroid known as Hashimoto’s.
The Proof Is in the Lab Tests
At one time I was a high-dose iodine and iodide prescriber until I reviewed some follow-up lab results on patient’s with thyroid issues. In August of 2008 a 53 year old woman consulted me for the typical low thyroid hormone symptoms and so we ran a thyroid blood test.
Her TSH was 3.5 (lab’s reference range of 0.35 to 5.5) so her TSH was pretty much right in the middle.
But her primary thyroid hormone, thyroxine, was 6.1 which is a little on the low side of the reference range of 4.5 to 12.
So I decided to administer a little iodine and iodide. Well it wasn’t so little. I gave her a 25mg mix of iodine and potassium iodide hoping these would pick up her TSH a little while providing lots of iodide to improve her thyroid hormone production.
Three months later we did a follow-up blood test to find her TSH had shot up to 107…. 107!!! I was shocked and horrified. That result catapulted me into the medical library for several months. After all, I had chosen alternative medicine to ‘do no harm’ and this TSH level would most certainly do this woman harm.
My primary concern was a TSH level of 107 would over stimulate her thyroid’s production of hydrogen peroxide leading to inflammation and eventually to Hashimoto’s.
Here’s another story to prove my point…
I told a close colleague of mine about these results and my apprehensions about this high dose prescribing of iodine and iodide and the possibility of it leading to Hashimoto’s. A lot of what we had formerly read on the subject of iodine and iodide showed a degree of ambivalence about this possibility, but now we had reached a new level of concern. My colleague did decide to continue prescribing the higher doses but would now screen every patient for Hashimoto’s before his recommendation.
One patient tested negative for Hashimoto’s and he recommended 25mg. She returned 6 months later with a lab test from her endocrinologist showing she was now positive for Hashimoto’s.
By the way, this doctor friend of mine developed thyroid cysts and severe hyperthyroidism which lasted for 2 months. This was definitely the result of experimenting with high doses of iodine and iodide. Luckily he refused the standard treatment (removal of his thyroid gland) and if fine today. But it was a scary ride.
Don’t take high doses of iodine and iodide, this is the essence of what I have to say.
There is absolutely no reason to go above the 3mg combination of iodine and potassium iodide. It may take a little longer to get to optimal storage and protection levels on this smaller dose but it’s safe. Do not be in a hurry.
I have studied all the sources of iodine and iodine in food, supplements and other products. You can read my other blogs on iodized salt, sea salt, kelp tablets and the most popular high-dose iodine supplements which I do not recommend. The product which I do recommend comes from Pure Research Labs. Yes, I am affiliated with them since I approached them with my research and product ideas but we are talking about high quality products which are not some relabeling or copy-cat. These are very specific formulations based upon medical science while are both safe and effective.

More On Iodine and Its Value

OK, I am talking a lot about IODINE in the last few posts. Reason being, I think there is a lot to talk about. Iodine plays a much more important role in our health and well being that I was ever aware of. I want to pass as long as much information as I can regarding this substance so that you will ask your diabetes doctors for an iodine test and also take a look at the many different symptoms that an iodine deficiency can play a role in and find out the best course of action for yourself and if IODINE can play a positive role in your recovery.

My point is that the medical community at large and the pharmaceutical companies have a tendency to prescribe drugs for each and every ill of mankind while not realizing that the drugs themselves are often responsible for many of the additional ills we suffer from. As an example how many different drugs are you taking right now to keep your blood glucose levels in line, and how many additional drugs for you blood pressure, your gout, your arthritis, your high cholesterol, your high triglycerides, etc. etc.???????

The bible says that all the parts of the body work together and the eye cannot dismiss the hand saying I have no need of you nor can the head say to the feet etc. Ask someone who has unfortunately lost their big toe in an accident how their sense of balance is affected?

I am by NO MEANS making a case for IODINE as a cure all for everything, however I am astounded at the broad spectrum role that having the proper daily intake of iodine plays. Again, iodine does not work independently of other vitamins, minerals and trace substances as a certain amount of selenium, magnesium etc. is needed to make the small amount of iodine able to do its work.

Balance is the KEY that unlocks "The Magic Toyshop" of our bodies well being and when all trace minerals and substances and the proper vitamins etc. along with a good diet are taken in, our bodies work as the Good Lord intended them to.

Iodine is a key element in fighting diabetes because it helps regulate the thyroid and is essential for a healthy liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleens and more. While it is well known that diet, obesity, food allergies, viral infections, and stress are all contributing factors for diabetes, it is less widely recognized that these factors are often either a cause of or caused by a weak liver, spleen, and pancreas.
For example, obesity is the result of poor diet and/or a sluggish liver which causes a sluggish metabolism. A sluggish liver is often associated with gallstones because the liver and gallbladder are interconnected. And gallstones are formed because of "bile stasis" due to a sluggish gallbladder. Fatty liver (a common complication of diabetes) is also an indicator of liver weakness, and chronic diarrhea (yet another common diabetes symptom) is caused by a weak spleen according to Chinese medicine.

Natural Remedies for Diabetes:
In addition to sensible dieting and physical activities, the following have all shown the ability to help with diabetes:
• GTF Chromium (Glucose Transport Factor Chromium) - The primary role of insulin is glucose transport is the primary role of insulin, chromium's main function is increasing insulin's efficiency in regulating blood sugar levels. In one study of 180 men and women with Type II diabetes, researchers divided the subjects into three groups, each receiving twice daily doses of either 200 mcg or 500 mcg of chromium or a placebo. The patients were allowed to continue with their usual diet and medications. At the end of two months, those who took 1,000 mcg of chromium daily showed significant improvement in insulin response, the number if insulin receptors, and levels of blood lipids (fats and cholesterol)0. • Pycnogenol - Pycnogenol is a powerful antioxidant derived from French maritime pine tree bark and the subject of more than 180 studies over 35 years which has been shown to reduce high blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and blood glucose without affecting insulin levels. Of particular note is its ability to reduce leakage into the retina by repairing capillaries in the eyes. While still largely unknown to American doctors, Pycnogenol is the leading prescription for diabetic retinopathy in France.
• "Oleander Extract" - A carefully prepared aqueous extract of the oleander plant made according to the directions in the e-book "Cancer's Natural Enemy" or available in essentially the same form as the herbal supplement Rose Laurel OPC Plus, and is now available for purchase in the U.S. at the Utopia Silver Suppplement company (http://www.utopiasilver.com) or internationally as the Sutherlandia OPC herbal supplement (http://www.sutherlandiaopc.com). • Gymnema Sylvestre - Is a plant that grows in the tropical forests of central and southern India and in parts of Africa. Herbalists in India have used the leaves of this long, slender plant as a treatment for diabetes for more than 2,000 years. The Hindu word "gumar," which means "sugar destroyer," describes the primary use of the herb in traditional Indian medicine. So strong is this herb that powered gymnema root has also been used to treat snake bites, constipation, stomach complaints, water retention, and liver disease. Doctors in India note that Gymnema Sylvestre is used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and in food additives against obesity and caries.
• Prickly Pear Cactus (Nopal) - Prickly pear could reduce the normal elevations in blood sugar levels after a meal by up to 50 per cent according to a recent study. Prickly pear cactus is widely used to control blood sugar and diabetes and the cactus pads are consumed regularly in Mexico,.
• Blackseed Oil (Nigella Sativa) - Also called black cumin seed (be sure that it is Nigella sativa regardless of what it is referred to as). Blackseed oil is legendary for its medicinal properties and has been used for thousands of years (Click here for more information). Preliminary research in animal trials has shown that that an extract from Nigella sativa seeds can reduce elevated blood sugar levels and the antioxidant activity of the extract may prevent the complications associated with uncontrolled type II diabetes.
• Fenugreek seed - Soak fenugreek seeds in about one teaspoon in water at night, drink that water in the morning and chew and eat the soaked seeds. Helps reduce blood sugar.
• Green plaintain peels - Wash a green plantain and peel it, then put the peel in a jar and cover with water. Let sit overnight, and then drink this water three times a day. Lowers your blood sugar level. Keep drinking as needed and change the peel every other day and refill the jar with water.
• Agaricus Blazei Murrill (ABM) Mushroom – referred to in it’s native Brazil as “The Mushroom of the Gods” with good reason due to it’s amazing immune boosting and disease fighting properties. Available in health food stores and online at various sites
• Alpha Lipoic Acid - In Germany, alpha-lipoic acid is an approved medical treatment for peripheral neuropathy, a common complication of diabetes. It speeds the removal of glucose from the bloodstream, at least partly by enhancing insulin function, and it reduces insulin resistance, an underpinning of many cases of coronary heart disease and obesity. The therapeutic dose for lipoic acid is 600 mg/day. In the United States, it is sold as a dietary supplement, usually as 50 mg tablets. (The richest food source of alpha-lipoic acid is red meat – but to insure proper health, use lean cuts of organic beef that has not been subject to antibiotics or feed lot practices).
• Cat’s Claw – Used by indigenous tribes in Peru and South America to treat diabetes. Available at health food stores.
• Cinnamon - Cinnamon has been shown to help regulate blood glucose levels and several studies indicate that it may be helpful against diabetes, particularly type II diabetes.
• Mullaca - Mullaca is employed in herbal medicine systems today in both Peru and Brazil. In Peruvian herbal medicine the plant is called mullaca or bolsa mullaca. To treat diabetes, the roots of three mullaca plants are sliced and macerated in 1/4 liter of rum for seven days. Honey is added, and 1/2 glass of this medicine is taken twice daily for 60 days. In addition, an infusion of the leaves is recommended as a good diuretic, and an infusion of the roots is used to treat hepatitis. For asthma and malaria, the dosage is 1 cup of tea made from the aerial parts of the plant. In Brazilian herbal medicine the plant is employed for chronic rheumatism, for skin diseases and dermatitis, as a sedative and diuretic, for fever and vomiting, and for many types of kidney, liver, and gallbladder problems.

WHY only One Or Two Brazil Nuts A Day?

Please read my other posts on Iodine supplementation and why it works best with selenium, magnesium, and other supplements. You do NOT want to overdose on selenium as it can be very dangerous.

I have advised in each post to limit your daily consumption of BRAZIL nuts to only 1 or two. This is not a food that if a little is good for you, then a whole bag full must be great for your health.

For many years I’ve known that consuming one Brazil nut a day supplies the human body with its daily requirement for selenium, an important trace mineral high in antioxidants. But here’s what I recently learned that gave me a bit of a jolt. Recent studies show that while Brazil nuts have many positive attributes, they also have a hidden side that sparked researchers to express cautionary advice.
I turn to nature rather than food manufacturers to provide the most nourishing foods for human consumption. I’m also cognizant that we humans absorb our vitamins and minerals best from pure, natural foods rather than from synthetically manufactured supplements. Human nature is kind of funny, though. We often have a tendency to believe that if a small amount of a nutrient-dense food or supplement is good for us, wouldn’t gobbling down double, triple, or five times the amount be even better?
That theory works well for some foods, like dark leafy greens, but it doesn’t apply across the board. That mind-set is especially problematic when it comes to Brazil nuts.
The bad news
In spite of their many positive qualities, Brazil nuts might be considered the bad boys of the nut family. Because Brazil nuts have an exceptionally high concentration of phytic acid, measuring 2% to 6% in their hulls, they might interfere with the absorption of some nutrients like iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium. While their monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats may be beneficial in lowering cholesterol when ingested in small quantities, Brazil nuts high level of saturated fat (25%) could possibly raise cholesterol levels if the nuts are consumed in large quantities.

Overdosing on selenium can cause a toxic condition known as selenosis, leaving patients with a host of nasty symptoms like hair loss, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sloughing of the fingernails, fatigue, irritability, and nerve damage. Less common are cirrhosis of the liver and kidney failure.

Is there a diabetes iodine link? There is some evidence that iodine has a very beneficial effect on blood sugar control. The following note talks about this.

It is from a paper written by a physician name Jorge Flechas, I believe his practice is in North Carolina. Dr Flechas is discussing the use of Iodoral, an iodine supplement to treat fibrocystic breast disease (FBD); while treating a woman for FBD, he discovered a diabetes iodine connection.
Dr. Flechas writes:

"It was while treating a large 320-pound woman with insulin dependent diabetes that we learned a valuable lesson regarding the role of iodine in hormone receptor function.
This woman had come in via the emergency room with a very high random blood sugar of 1,380 mg/dl. She was then started on insulin during her hospitalization and was instructed on the use of a home glucometer. She was to use her glucometer two times per day.
Two weeks later on her return office visit for a checkup of her insulin dependent diabetes she was informed that during her hospital physical examination she was noted to have Fibrocystic Breast Disease.

She then informed me that she had come off her insulin three weeks earlier and had not been taking any medications to lower her blood sugar. When asked what she felt the big change was, she felt that her diabetes was under better control due to the use of iodine.
Two years later and 70 pounds lighter this patient continues to have excellent glucose control on iodine 50 mg per day."

In an interview with Jimmy Moore, Dr. Flechas explained the diabetes iodine interaction: "The iodine attaches itself to hormone receptors within the body and increases the sensitivity of the receptor to its associated hormone. In this patients case, the iodine increased her sensitivity to the hormone insulin to the point of normalizing her blood sugars."




Formal Studies

Dr. Flechas has done some formal studies on the connection between diabetes and iodine:


We since have done a study of twelve diabetics and in six cases we were able to wean all of these patients off of medications for their diabetes and were able to maintain a hemoglobin A1C of less than 5.8 with the average random blood sugar of less than 100. To this date these patients continue to have excellent control of their Type II diabetes.
The range of daily iodine intake was from 50 mg to 100 mg per day.

"MY INPUT: (How many mcg / micrograms in one mg / milligram? Good Question. There are 1000 micrograms in one milligram. Therefore my math tells me that people who are on 50mg's of iodine daily and it was considered a safe dose under a doctor's supervision, that most of us are safe taking (2) 400mcg Kelp tablets daily."

All diabetic patients were able to lower the total amount of medications necessary to control their diabetes. Two of the twelve patients were controlled with the use of iodine plus one medication. Two patients have control of diabetes with iodine plus two medications. One patient had control of her diabetes with three medications plus iodine 50 mg. The one insulin dependent diabetic was able to reduce the intake of Lantus insulin from 98 units to 44 units per day within a period of a few weeks.
In the Type 1 diabetics that we have been following we have noted that if C-peptide is measurable, this would suggest that the individual is making their own insulin. I have been able to help this group of patients to get off insulin or to greatly reduce the amount they need for good glucose control with Iodoral at 4 tablets/day (50 mg). If C-peptide is absent then we feel there is no insulin being produced and we have not been able to help this particular group of patients to get off their insulin. We have been able to help these patients lower the total amount of insulin needed to control their glucose."


I wonder if part of the healthy effects of a whole food, lower carb diet's effect on promoting good health has to do with eating more of the foods (like eggs, whole milk dairy and seafood) which have iodine in them.
I hope further studies on the diabetes iodine connection are done in the near future.

(MY INPUT) The 50mg dose given is considerably higher than the 150mcg in most over the counter iodine supplements and most kelp tabs. (see my input note above.)

Have You Had Your Iodine Level Tested?

I recently had my own iodine level tested along with my usual blood lipid profile. I found out that I am in the "Normal" range but just barely. Normal range is considered to be 40-92 and mine was (42) which I am viewing a LOW normal.

IN doing some research on the subject it seems opinions vary widely even amongst professionals. The standard dose seems to be 150mcg per day which if you purchase a bottle of KELP tablets from your local health food store, most of them list 100% RDA at 150 mcg and to take only (1) per day and not to go over that. Tonight I purchased a bottle of 100 caps of Nature's Way KELP capsules certified to contain 660 MG of KELP broken down as follows:

IRON         390mcg
IODINE     400mcg
SODIUM     20mg
KELP         660mg   (Whole Thallus)

400mcg divided by normal dosage found in say KELP tabs or capsule is at about 275% of the 150mcg dose.

The link I am going to post here goes into a lot of detail on IODINE supplementation and indicates that the 150mcg is far less than has been prescribed in the past with NO ill effects. Am I suggesting you go out and overdose on iodine if it is found out you are deficient? NO I AM NOT, however I think it is worth reading what is written on both sides of the isle concerning the proper doeseage.

Iodine deficiency has been identified with insulin resistance in diabetes and a HOST of other ailments. I think this is an arena where one could spend a lot of time studying the topic and arriving at different conclusions. Knowing that the RDA of a lot of nutrients is much lower than what the OPTIMUM dose for good health is, my early on guess is that IODINE supplementation falls into that class. TO BE FAIR, there are some serious complications from over dosing on iodine, so be careful and do your homework after first having your iodine levels checked by a blood or urine test.

As an example the RDA for vitamin C was I believe set a limit to prevent scurvy, which is MUCH less than the optimum vitamin C dose for good health. Check out this link to verify:

There are several reference points we can use to plot out iodine dosages for a variety of disorders that beg for the use of iodine for successful treatment. In this chapter I will present different views and practices from present as well as from the long past when iodine was vastly more popular as a medicine than it is today. For whatever irrational reason, doctors and patients fear iodine thus en mass do not use to its fullest potential.
Humans tolerate large doses of iodine but the ultra high doses that were used many decades ago are not required to get the most out of iodine therapy. Just a little goes a long way, as the governmental iodized salt programs showed but this dosage level was only affective for Goiter and its avoidance. It actually takes very little iodine to prevent this disease but no one ever said that was the only purpose and need for iodine in the body. Today people are more deficient then ever before because our need for iodine has increased in direct proportion to our toxic burdens especially of other competing halogens.

Dr. Michael B. Schachter says, “The treatment dose when a person is iodine insufficient is generally between 12.5 mg and 50 mg daily. Preliminary research indicates that if a person is iodine insufficient, it takes about 3 months to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 50 mg of iodine and a year to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 12.5 mg of iodine daily. However, the patient needs to be monitored closely with awareness of possible side effects and detoxification reactions.” This is quite a bit of iodine and if his statements can be substantiated then most people are using dosages which are much too low.
In fact if we put our attention on the full iodine story, which collides with the fluoride, mercury and bromide story we conclude that we can only err on the side of too low of a dose. Patients should push their dosages higher and higher until they get the desired result but I recommend doing this slowly unless there is little time as is the case in emergency situations or very late stage cancer. When using the Nascent Iodine one can dose pulse every two hours orally taking each individual dose up to as many as 20 drops and even at this level we are no where near points of iodine toxicity and tolerance. I have given my own three year old up to fifteen drops in a dose when she was confronted with fever and infection.

When treating life threatening diseases we do not have months to fool around with low dosages. We need to zoom up iodine levels quickly. And we need to get it concentrated to certain tissues or organs. Just to give you an idea of how high iodine dosages have been taken to we have to revisit the 1930s when iodine was still a universal medicine, present in the US Pharmacopeia and was used at much higher dosages than anyone even dreams of using today.
The usual dose for treatment was 300 mgs (46 drops of full strength Lugol’s) to 1 gm (1000 mg, 154 drops). It is very important to realize that today’s Lugol’s is not universally the same as it was because of new federal legal requirements about concentration levels. The best company offers Lugol’s at varying concentration levels. (2.2, 3 and 7 percent) Nascent is a 2 percent solution.
Preoperative before thyroidectomy: Lugol solution 5-10 gtt
three times daily, or 2-6 gtt twice or three times daily
given 10-21 days prior to surgery has been used.

Dr. Schachter wrote,” Dr. Abraham started this Iodine Project around 1998 when he became aware of the many benefits of treating patients with iodine using doses far beyond the 2 mg a day, which most physicians consider to be potentially toxic. He noted that starting in the 1820s, the French physician Jean Lugol used these higher doses to treat a wide variety of conditions. Dr. Lugol combined elemental iodine (5 %) and potassium iodide (10%) with 85 % water. Since iodine kills infectious agents, Dr. Lugol successfully treated many infectious conditions with this solution, which became known as Lugol’s solution, and which is still available today. Prior to World War II, many American and European physicians used Lugol’s solution to treat thyroid conditions, using doses higher than 2 mg daily without apparent significant adverse effects.”

The Iodine Connection and Type 2 Diabetes

I came across several articles reporting on the link between insulin resistance and iodine supplementation. It is something that you might want to discuss with your doctor. Type 2 diabetics are having success in coming off their medications and/or lowering their insulin intake by supplementing with iodine IF THAT IS DETERMINED TO BE AFFECTING THEIR INSULIN RESISTANCE. I would recommend you get a blood and/or urine test done in a hospital lab or doctors office and then discuss this with your diabetes doctor before running out and buying iodine supplements at random.

Is there a diabetes iodine link? There is some evidence that iodine has a very beneficial effect on blood sugar control. The following note talks about this.

It is from a paper written by a physician name Jorge Flechas, I believe his practice is in North Carolina. Dr Flechas is discussing the use of Iodoral, an iodine supplement to treat fibrocystic breast disease (FBD); while treating a woman for FBD, he discovered a diabetes iodine connection.

How to Test for Iodine DeficiencyResearch has found that if the body suffers from iodine deficiency, it may lead to mental retardation and is believed to be one of the major problem with children. The only way to get rid of conditions like hot flashes and mental retardation, is to consume foods rich in iodine. You may also feel tired very soon, besides your body may pain if there is insufficient amount of iodine in the body.

Home test for iodine deficiency includes taking some iodine and a swab of cotton. You can find tincture iodine in a drugstore. Dip the cotton swab in the tincture iodine and paint a circle in the inner part of your upper arm or the thighs. Once you have done with that, wait for an hour. After an hour if you find that the circle has disappeared, it means that your body is deficient in iodine. However, on the other hand, if the circle remains as it is for at least four hours, it means that the iodine levels are fine. This is one of the easiest self test which you can use, but if you are still not sure, you can get a iodine deficiency test done in a laboratory.

If you go for a test in a laboratory, they would take a sample of your urine, and this sample is usually taken early in the morning. After the sample is taken, you will be given a iodine tablet which would be of a particular dose. After a few minutes your urine sample would again be taken and it's at this point of time that your urine is tested. If the iodine levels are normal, them most of the iodine which was ingested through the tablet, would be excreted. On the other hand, if your body lacks iodine, then it would be retained in the body.
Usually if the doctor finds something abnormal with the thyroid glands, then he would suggest you get a test of these glands done. No doubt they don't measure the levels of iodine in the body, but it can give the doctor a good idea of thyroid problems.

Blood Test for Iodine Deficiency

Besides urine test, blood tests are also done to see whether the iodine levels in the body are sufficient or not. Blood tests are done to check the levels of thyroid hormones in the blood. If the amount of thyroid hormones are low it means that the body is not being able to produce enough of this hormone due to the lack of iodine or due to malfunction of thyroid gland.
So, there are a number of ways to test for iodine deficiency. Whether you test it at home, or in a laboratory, get in touch with a doctor to know the reasons behind such deficiency and the kinds of iodine rich foods which you should take to rejuvenate the levels of iodine in the body. Nowadays, certain amount of iodine is added to the salt to take care of this problem.
