NEW Information On Controling Type 2 Diabetes With Diet (vs.) Insulin Boosting Drugs

In light of the last several posts on heart disease and the combination of Vitamin C, L-Lysine and L-Proline along with pycogenol, B-Vitamins and COQ10, I came across some meaningful information on type 2 diabetes. Since heart disease and diabetes are closely linked together, I thought you might find this interesting. The bottom line is that most diabetic drugs rely on producing your body's output of insulin to lower your blood sugar readings. TOO much insulin is a real problem especially over a long period of time.

The basics I have been preaching on my blog is here.....EXERCISE (walk for 45 mins plus daily, avoid the crunchie/munchie isle of your local super market, avoid all foods containing hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. Take your vitamin and mineral supplements and know which ones to take. Drink more water.......avoid fruit juices (eat the whole fruit instead).

5 Steps To Reverse Type 2 Diabetes and Insulin Resistance

Today, I want to share with you more information about what you can do NOW to prevent and reverse diabetes and pre-diabetes.
And rye bread isn’t the only answer – I’ve got a lot more good advice, too.
But first I want to emphasize new research that should be headlines news but never saw the light of day. Do our current drugs treatments for diabetes actually work to prevent heart attacks and death?
Surely lowering blood sugar in diabetics is an effective strategy for reducing the risk of death and heart disease. It would seem obvious that if diabetes is a disease of high blood sugar, then reducing blood sugar would be beneficial.
However elevated sugar is only a symptom, not the cause of the problem. The real problem is elevated insulin unchecked over decades from a highly refined carbohydrate diet, a sedentary lifestyle and environmental toxins.
Most medications and insulin therapy are aimed at lowering blood sugar through increasing insulin. In the randomized ACCORD trial of over 10,000 patients, this turns out to be a bad idea.
In the intensive glucose-lowering group, there were no fewer heart attacks, and more patients died. Yet we continue to pay $174 billion annually for this type of care for diabetes, despite evidence that lifestyle works better than medications. We also pay for cardiac bypass and angioplasty in diabetics when evidence shows no reduction in death or heart attacks compared to medication.
So now that we know what doesn’t work, let me review what does work.
Dietary Recommendations to Reverse Diabetes
Eating in a way that balances your blood sugar, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, and improves your liver detoxification is the key to preventing and reversing insulin resistance and diabetes.
This is a way of eating that based on a whole foods diet that’s high in fiber, rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, and low in sugars and flours, with a low glycemic load.
It is a way of eating that includes anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxifying foods. It includes plenty of omega-3 fats and olive oil, soy products, beans, nuts, and seeds.
All these foods help prevent and reverse diabetes and insulin resistance. This is the way of eating than turns on all the right gene messages, promotes a healthy metabolism, and prevents aging and age-related diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Here are more specifics.
Meal Timing
  • Eat protein for breakfast every day, such as whole omega-3 eggs, a soy protein shake, or nut butters.
  • Eat something every 4 hours to keep your insulin and glucose levels normal.
  • Eat small protein snacks in the morning and afternoon, such as a handful of almonds.
  • Finish eating at least 2 to 3 hours before bed. If you have a snack earlier in the day, you won’t be as hungry, even if you eat a little later.
Meal Composition
  • Controlling the glycemic load of your meals is very important.
  • You can do this by combining adequate protein, fats, and whole-food carbohydrates from vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and fruit at every meal or snack.
  • It is most important to avoid eating quickly absorbed carbohydrates alone, as they raise your sugar and insulin levels.
Travel Suggestions
Two handfuls of almonds in a zip-lock bag make a useful emergency snack. You can eat them with a piece of fruit. Remember, real food is the best.
What to Eat
  • Choose from a variety of the following real, whole foods:
  • Choose organic produce and animal products whenever possible.
  • Eat high-quality protein, such as fish – especially fatty, cold-water fish like salmon, sable, small halibut, herring, and sardines – and shellfish.
  • Cold-water fish such as salmon, halibut, and sable contain an abundance of beneficial essential fatty acids, omega-3 oils that reduce inflammation. Choose smaller wild Alaskan salmon, sable, and halibut that are low in toxins. Canned wild salmon is a great “emergency” food.
  • Eat up to eight omega-3 eggs a week.
  • Create meals that are high in low-glycemic legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, and soybeans (try edamame, the Japanese soybeans in a pod, quickly steamed with a little salt, as a snack). These foods slow the release of sugars into the bloodstream, which helps prevent the excess insulin release that can lead to health concerns like obesity, high blood pressure, and heart problems.
  • Eat a cornucopia of fresh fruits and vegetables teeming with phytonutrients like carotenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols, which are associated with a lower incidence of nearly all health problems, including obesity and age-related disease.
  • Eat more low-glycemic vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli, kale, spinach, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts.
  • Berries, cherries, peaches, plums, rhubarb, pears, and apples are optimal fruits. Cantaloupes and other melons, grapes, and kiwifruit are suitable; however, they contain more sugar. You can use organic frozen berries (such as those from Cascadian Farms) in your protein shakes.
  • Focus on anti-inflammatory foods, including wild fish and other sources of omega-3 fats, red and purple berries (these are rich in polyphenols), dark green leafy vegetables, orange sweet potatoes, and nuts.
  • Eat more antioxidant-rich foods, including orange and yellow vegetables, dark green leafy vegetables (kale, collards, spinach, etc.), anthocyanidins (berries, beets, grapes, pomegranate), purple grapes, blueberries, bilberries, cranberries, and cherries. In fact, antioxidants are in all colorful fruits and vegetables.
  • Include detoxifying foods in your diet, such as cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, and Chinese broccoli), green tea, watercress, dandelion greens, cilantro, artichokes, garlic, citrus peels, pomegranate, and even cocoa.
  • Season your food with herbs such as rosemary, ginger, and turmeric, which are powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and detoxifiers.
  • Avoid excessive quantities of meat. Eat lean organic or grass-fed animal products, when possible. These include eggs, beef, chicken, pork, lamb, buffalo, and ostrich. There are good brands at Whole Foods and other local health-food stores (also see mail order sources).
  • Garlic and onions contain antioxidants, enhance detoxification, act as anti-inflammatories, and help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • A diet high in fiber further helps to stabilize blood sugar by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates and supports a healthy lower bowel and digestive tract. Try to gradually increase fiber to 30 to 50 grams a day and use predominantly soluble or viscous fiber (legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit), which slows sugar absorption from the gut.
  • Use extra virgin olive oil, which contains anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants, as your main cooking oil.
  • Soy Products such as soymilk, soybeans, and tofu are rich in antioxidants that can reduce cancer risk, lower cholesterol, and improve insulin and blood sugar metabolism.
  • Increase your intake of nuts and seeds, including raw walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, and pumpkin and flax seeds.
  • And yes … chocolate can be healthy, too. Choose only the darkest varieties and eat only 2 to 3 ounces a day. It should contain 70 percent cocoa.
Decrease (or ideally eliminate) your intake of:
  • All processed or junk foods
  • Foods containing refined white flour and sugar, such as breads, cereals (cornflakes, Frosted Flakes, puffed wheat, and sweetened granola), flour-based pastas, bagels, and pastries
  • All foods containing high-fructose corn syrup
  • All artificial sweeteners (aspartame, Sorbitol, etc.) and caffeine
  • Starchy, high-glycemic cooked vegetables, such as potatoes, corn, and root vegetables such as rutabagas, parsnips, and turnips
  • Processed fruit juices, which are often loaded with sugars (Try juicing your own carrots, celery, and beets, or other fruit and vegetable combinations, instead)
  • Processed canned vegetables (usually very high in sodium)
  • Foods containing hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils (which become trans fatty acids in the bloodstream), such as most crackers, chips, cakes, candies, cookies, doughnuts, and processed cheese
  • Processed oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower, peanut, and canola
  • Red meats (unless organic or grass-fed) and organ meats
  • Large predatory fish and river fish, which contain mercury and other contaminants in unacceptable amounts, including swordfish, tuna, tilefish and shark
  • Dairy — substitute unsweetened, gluten free soymilk, almond milk, or hazelnut milk products
  • Alcohol — limit it to no more than 3 glasses a week of red wine per week
Balance Blood Sugar with Exercise
Exercise is critical for the improvement of insulin sensitivity. It helps reduce central body fat, improving sugar metabolism. Regular exercise will help prevent diabetes, reduce your risk of complications, and even help reverse it.
Ideally you should do 30 minutes of walking every day. Walking after dinner is a powerful way to reduce your blood sugar.
More vigorous exercise and sustained exercise is often needed to reverse severe insulin resistance or diabetes. Doing sustained aerobic exercise for up to 60 minutes 5 to 6 times a week is often necessary to get diabetes under full control. You want to work at 70 to 85 percent of your target heart rate, which you can find by subtracting your age from 220 and multiplying that number by 0.70 to 0.85.
Interval training can be an added benefit to helping improve your metabolism and mitochondrial function. It helps to increase the efficiency calorie burning so that you burn more calories and energy during the time you are NOT exercising. This is described in detail in UltraMetabolism.
Strength training also helps maintain and build muscle, which can help also with your overall blood sugar and energy metabolism.
Supplements that Can Help Reverse Diabetes
Nutritional supplements can be very effective for Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. I recommend a number of different supplements, depending on the severity of the problem:
  • A multivitamin and mineral.
  • Calcium and magnesium and vitamin D.
  • Fish oil (1,000 to 4,000 mg) a day improves insulin sensitivity, lowers cholesterol, and reduces inflammation.
  • Extra magnesium (200 to 600 mg a day) helps with glucose metabolism and is often deficient in diabetics.
  • Chromium (500 to 1,000 mcg day) is very important for proper sugar metabolism.
  • Antioxidants (such as vitamins C and E) are important in helping to reduce and balance blood sugar.
  • B-complex vitamins are important and are part of a good multivitamin. Extra vitamin B6 (50 to 150 mg a day) and B12 (1,000 to 3,000 mcg) are especially helpful in protecting against diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage.
  • Biotin (2,000 to 4,000 mcg a day) enhances insulin sensitivity.
  • I also encourage people to use alpha-lipoic acid (300 mg twice a day), a powerful antioxidant that can reduce blood sugar significantly. It also can be effective for diabetic nerve damage or neuropathy.
  • Evening primrose oil (500 to 1,000 mg twice a day) helps overcome deficiencies common in diabetics.
  • I encourage people to use cinnamon as a supplement. One to two 500 mg tablets twice a day can help blood sugar control.
  • Other herbs and supplements that can be helpful include green tea, ginseng, bitter melon, gymnema, bilberry, ginkgo, onions, and garlic. Fenugreek can also be used to help improve blood sugar ,although large amounts must be taken.
  • Banana leaf (Lagerstroemia speciosa) can be an effective herb. Take 24 mg twice a day.
  • I recommend konjac fiber, such as PGX (WellBetX), four capsules 10 minutes before meals with a glass of water. This helps reduce blood sugar after meals and improves long-term blood sugar control while reducing appetite and cholesterol.
Manage Diabetes by Managing Stress
Stress plays a dramatic role in blood sugar imbalances. It triggers insulin resistance, promotes weight gain around the middle, increases inflammation, and ultimately can cause diabetes. So it’s essential to engage in relaxation practices on a regular basis, such as yoga, breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, hot baths, exercise, meditation, massage, biofeedback, hypnosis, or even making love. Your survival depends on it.
Use Medications if Necessary
A number of medications may be helpful for diabetes. There are several specific classes of medications, each with their own effects. Sometimes combinations are helpful.
These are the main classes.
  1. The biguanides, especially metformin (Glucophage), is one of the best medications to improve insulin sensitivity. It can help lower blood sugars by improving your cells’ response to insulin.
  2. Thiazolidinedione drugs are a new class of diabetes medication and can help improve uptake of glucose by the cells by making you more insulin-sensitive. They also reduce inflammation and help improve metabolism working on the PPAR, a special class of cell receptors that control metabolism. They can cause weight gain and liver damage. Thiazolidinediones include rosiglutazone (Avandia) and pioglitazone (Actos).
  3. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors include acarbose and miglitol, which can help lower the absorption of sugar and carbohydrates in the intestines, reducing the absorption of sugar after meals. And there are newer medication on the market every day.
Older medications include sulfonylureas include glipizide, glyburide, and glimepiride. I strongly recommend against these medications because they only reduce your sugar in the short term and cause further insulin production, which actually worsens diabetes over the long term. They have also been linked to high risk of heart attacks, which you are trying to prevent. They treat the symptoms rather than the cause.
Insulin is the last resort after all other measures have failed and often leads to a slippery slope of weight gain and increased cholesterol and blood pressure. Many patients have been able to come off insulin entirely if they are treated early and aggressively through the other methods I’ve listed.
Diabetes and its precursor, insulin resistance, are looming as the major threat to our health in the 21st century. It will affect 1 in 3 children born today, and 1 in 2 minority children. This is a tragic consequence of our toxic food environment, our unmitigated exposure to stress, our sedentary lifestyle, and environmental toxins.
However, these problems are completely preventable and often reversible through aggressive lifestyle changes, supplements, and exercise and stress management.
Diabetes is the biggest health epidemic triggered by the obesity epidemic, but all of our medical efforts to treat it are focused on medications and insulin. It is simply the wrong approach.
If you follow these guidelines instead, you will see a dramatic change very quickly in your health, your weight, and your diabetes.

Summary of What To Eat and What To Avoid

I know I sound like a broken record, however the basic information out there to eat healthier and live longer is pretty much the same since started this blog.

Things to avoid as much as humanly possible:

Refined Sugar, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated chemically altered oils and trans fats. These items are rampant in darn near every pre-packaged, so called comfort foods, and what I call "Munchy/crunchy foods such as potato chips, pretzels, and 99% of the entire grocery isle with this type of food. It is loaded with trans fats, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, food additives, chemicals, dyes, preservatives etc.
All carbonated sodas whether Diet or regular Pepsi, coke, root beer, orange etc. These destroy your body's interstitial fluid PH balance and the regular sodas can contain anywhere from 35 to upwards of EIGHTY grams of sugar.
The Majority of the pre-packaged cereal isle. I didn't say ALL, just most of it. This is especially true for all the artificially flavored kids cereals and even most of the one's with BIG PRINT on the front indicating, contains FIBER or RDA of 7 or 9 or whatever daily vitamins. You would be better to spend the money on a quality multiple vitamin/mineral supplement and pass on all the high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, refined sugar, additives, preservatives, dyes etc. TRY Quaker oats with organic ground flax seeds sprinkled on it with FRESH or FROZEN fruit. Hey, "Ya never know".............your Kid's might actually like it.
READ LABELS on frozen foods and especially canned goods as these can contain surprising amounts of sodium, preservatives, hydrogenated oils etc.
SKIP THE bakery for the most part as almost all donuts, eclairs, cream filled or jelly filled baked goods, pies, cakes, and even a lot of the Oat/Nut or 12 grain breads etc. contain tons of hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, etc.

I know that ONE won't kill you. When was the last time you ate JUST ONE or bought just one?

CONCENTRATE:

On fresh fruits and vegetables or frozen fruit and veggies (read the ingredient label)
Select meats and seafood
Nuts such as cashews, walnuts, peanuts, pistachios etc. - preferably RAW
Purified or ionized water

Sugar: The sweet killer

Sugar destroys the body in many ways – planting disease, eroding health and ultimately shortening our lives. In short, sugar kills!

Sugar is one of the basic elements found in starchy food. However, the refined white sugar, which we generally refer to using the term “sugar”, is industrially processed and really not suitable or safe for human consumption.
It is devoid of nutrients and acts more like a drug than a food. This substance is addictive and has been called “the most dangerous white powder known to man”. In fact, sugar does more damage to human health than any other poison, drug or narcotic.
Amazingly, refined sugar is viewed as a necessity or an “essential” food – both in the eyes of the public and the government! It is ranked among food staples such as rice and cooking oil, and is a price-controlled item. A sugar shortage is considered a national crisis – crippling eateries, drink and food manufacturers, food traders and the general public.
Malaysians are reported to be among the highest consumers of sugar in South East Asia. In the 1970s, Malaysians consumed about 17 teaspoons of sugar a day. This figure went up to about 21 teaspoons a day in the 1980s. Now, Malaysians are reported to be consuming an average of 24 teaspoons of sugar per day.

The general guideline on sugar consumption is that it should be from 0 to ten teaspoons a day. Ideally, Malaysians should be targeting the lower end of the range.

Over 60 ailments have been linked to sugar consumption, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, asthma, and allergies. Some of these killer diseases are showing worrying upward trends in just a few years.

Take for example the deadly disease, diabetes. It has already reached very alarming proportions in the country. Diabetes Type 2 is strongly linked to high sugar consumption and obesity.

In the first National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) carried out in 1986, the prevalence of diabetes was 6.3%. Just 10 years later this figure increased to 8.3%. Now, based on the latest NHMS III, conducted in 2006, diabetes prevalence has increased to 14.9%.

Most people find it hard to believe or accept that they can be consuming an average of 24 teaspoons of sugar a day. That is because we may be thinking only of the “visible” white sugar which we see and buy for use in preparations at home. However, an increasing amount of sugar that is consumed by the public is contained in industrially-prepared drinks and food.

For instance, some soft drinks contain an average of at least 7 teaspoons of sugar per can. During CAP surveys, we noted a number of the commercial drinks and food contained over 10 teaspoons of sugar in just one serving. Consumers are often unaware of how much sugar they are consuming in total throughout the day.

Urgent action needs to be taken to curb our national sugar consumption. In view of the alarming situation, CAP calls on the Government to:

• Work with manufacturers to reduce sugar contents in their products.

• Require manufacturers to amend their labels to clearly depict the amount of sugar in their food. To ensure that this information is understood by consumers, the sugar content could be shown graphically in terms of the number of teaspoons of sugar. (One teaspoon is approximately equivalent to 5g). With this improved labeling, consumers can instantly see the amount of sugar that they will be consuming and adjust their habits accordingly.

• Institute “traffic light” labeling to further enhance consumer awareness. This scheme has been shown to be effective in enabling consumers to assess the significance of nutrient levels within a particular product, and also allows for comparison between products. Under this scheme, red, orange and green colour coding would indicate whether the levels of these ingredients of concern are high, medium or low. The presence of the red, orange or green signals on food packaging would serve as an instant notice for consumers – even children or those with limited nutritional knowledge or numerical skills would easily be able to comprehend these signals. It would also act as a prompt for manufacturers to reformulate healthier versions of their products.

• Bring to a halt the advertisement of highly-sugared and other junk food and drink during children’s television viewing hours. Many junk food advertisements, including those for sweets, chocolates and soft drinks are shown just before or after children’s programmes. Children are susceptible to media pressure.

• Educate school children on the dangers of excessive sugar intake through health education, home science and cookery lessons.

• Educate the public on the dangers of sugar intake through the media especially through the television, radio and the popular press.

• Encourage children to avoid sweet drinks in schools by providing drinking water in water dispensers around school premises. Sweet drinks should not be sold in school canteens so that children learn to select water as a first-choice drink.

• Have a total ban on the sale of junk food in school canteens.

• Ban food hawking within a fixed perimeter around schools so that schoolchildren are not tempted to purchase and consume unhealthy foods.

• Put an end to child-height confectionery displays at supermarkets and grocery stores which are usually placed near checkout counters to attract children.

• Initiate the removal of vending machines dispensing junk food and sugary drinks from areas such as hospitals, airports and schools.

Parents can play an effective role in:

• Ensuring that highly-sugared products and sweets are not stocked in their homes.

• Setting a healthy example for the young by not eating sweets, chocolates and junk food in their presence.

• Not displaying their love for their children by rewarding them with sweet things.

• Making vegetables and fruits appealing to children and clearly explaining the benefits of these foods to them.

Dangers of Excess Insulin

Anyone whose blood sugar is not under optimum control is exposed to the dangers of chronically elevated insulin levels. Our bodies continue to pump out insulin as long as our blood sugar levels are above normal and can result in an insulin level that is dangerously high in an effort to keep blood sugar at a normal level.

While insulin is useful and a necessary hormone responsible for driving  blood sugar into cells where it can be burned for energy, too much insulin can be deadly. Insulin is also a powerful growth factor. As a healthy adult there is a limited need for more growth factors. Excessive growth factor production can trigger cell replication in places it isn't wanted or needed. Too much insulin and growth factors are linked to cancer where unregulated cellular reproduction can produce deadly malignancies. It also plays a role in the thickening and poor responsiveness of smooth muscle cells which line the arterial walls and contribute to cardiovascular disease. Excessive insulin production is the result of "insulin resistance" or pre-diabetes. High insulin levels are associated with an approximate 37% increase of dying from cancer whether or not you even have diabetes.

Something I did not know is that most anti diabetic drugs aim to ONLY drive blood sugar levels lower while having NO EFFECT on your insulin levels. Other drugs actually increase your insulin production in an attempt to again lower your blood glucose levels. Human studies have shown that (transflucosidase has a positive effect in lowering excess insulin over time. In one study patients who already had diabetes and elevated insulin levels, after 12 weeks of transglucosidase supplementation led to significant drops in insulin concentration overall.

STEPS TO CONSIDER:

A broad, comprehensive approach could be:
  • It makes sense to me to alter one's diet so as to dramatically reduce the amount of refined carbohydrates which turn into simple sugars quickly in the digestive track. In other words, take action to dramatically reduce the consumption of refined carbohydrates and empty calorie foods at the source ........your mouth and fork and spoon.
  • Walk at least 1/2 hour or more every day - alternate walking at your normal pace with short intensive bouts of walking as fast as you can
  • If you are able, do some weight resistance exercise such as squats with the weights, pull ups, chin ups, push ups, biking etc. every other day.
  • Stop drinking carbonated sodas whether diet or regular - they are bad for your PH and the regular sodas are a source of empty calories and concentrated excessive amounts of sugar. If your PH is acidic that causes inflammation which is strongly linked to dozens of diseases including, but not limited to Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Purchase a supplement containing adequate amounts of transglucosidase and take a capsule before your heaviest meal of the day or any starchy meal. (SEE my last post on two sources of supplements available with this critical enzyme) I recommend Life Extension Magazine's supplement for best potency and pricing.
  • Make a conscious effort to get more soluble and insoluble fiber in your diet, especially with any carbohydrate or starchy meal. This should total 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day. MOST of us NEED more FIBER.
  • Consider taking a high potency broad spectrum multivitamin/mineral supplement
  • IN addition to that supplement consider also taking: Olive leaf extract, Testofen if your testosterone levels are low, tart cherry caps (for inflammation), pycogenol, CQ10 (especially if you are on any statin or cholesterol lowering drugs), a better product to lower cholesterol and trigycerides would be (CHOLESLO), Taurine caps, Milk thistle for your liver, a B-compex vitamin, Magnesium-L-Threonate, and a daily Kelp tablet for iodine

  • In addition I would strongly consider purchasing a Vita Mixer (or similar machine) and learn to make and drink a green smoothies every day for your body's interstitial fluid PH.
  • Lastly I would consider a complex pro-biotic and/OR  perhaps learn how to make water kefir (very inexpensive) and also good for your PH, lowering inflammation and your overall digestive health.


Sounds somewhat expensive and a lot of work and things to remember. That being said, having your legs amputated, going blind, getting cancer, heart attacks, diabetic neuropathy etc. is a little confusing, expensive and inconvenient also.

Benefits of an ORANGE a Day

Although there are people I am sure that don't like the taste of oranges, I never personally met one. I happen to love oranges and thought it would be nice to do a post on the benefits of  eating or making smoothies using an orange a day.

Oranges contain:

For diabetics best advice might be to EAT the whole orange so the fiber can help slow down absorption preventing sugar spikes. Another idea (which I do) is to put a whole naval orange into my VitaMixer along with ice cold water, a scoop of why protein. You automatically get all the benefits of the fruit, juice and all ingredients including the white outer surface containing bioflavnoids. I like this approach compared to a juicer where you end up throwing the fruit itself along with the fiber etc. away.

Rich Food / Poor Food

In watching Fox news this morning, I caught a segment on Rich Food / Poor Food which dealt with a new book by William David MD and it is an interesting book on how food additives and flavorings can cause you to eat more and make you believe you are still hungry when you are not. In many cases your Appestat does not shut down when it should. Food additives such as MSG, artificial flavors, high sugar content etc. can interfere with the digestive process. As an example sugar and high fructose corn syrup blocks calcium and magnesium absorption, and increases appetite.

Black Beans and Barley Reduce Blood Glucose

Do you want to take steps to reduce your blood glucose levels naturally? Black beans and barley can play a significant role in helping you do that. Barley contains both insoluble and soluble fiber which have both proven effective in lowering blood glucose levels. Barley has even been proven better than oats in some studies. It apparently has to do with the higher content of soluble fiber in the barley. Whole barley reduces free fatty acids in the blood better than other grains up to 10 hours after consumption. In a 12 week study soluble fiber from whole barley reduced fasting serum insulin values.

Delicious Whey Protein Smoothie

Lately I have been adding more protein to my diet in the form of whey protein. The older I get, the less red meat I am eating and felt the need to supplement with when protein. I buy mine currently at the local WalMart and it is called Body Fortress Super Advanced WHEY Protein  vanilla flavored and sells for around $15.95 for a 2 pound canister.

It contains 9 essential amino acids and 9 nonessential amino acids

I could feel the difference in my well being the very first day I started on it. I used to get a blood sugar plummet around 10:30AM to 11:30AM after breakfast and after taking my supplements and morning prescriptions which include metformin and glipizide.

I now drink about 16 ounces of the whey protein mix and I do not have the blood sugar plummet and subsequent drop in energy levels either. It beats grabbing something sugary or high in carbs if you feel you are having a morning let down in blood sugar.

I put into my Vita Mixer fat free skim milk and ice cold water. I normally make a larger shake and share it with my wife. I usually mix  25% skim milk to 75% ice cold water. I add two scoops of the protein powder mix to 4 or 5 frozen strawberries and one peeled naval orange and blend till liquid and well mixed. It is delicious and hits the spot for the mid-morning pick me up.

I also find I have more energy when doing the push up routine I started a few months ago and the walking. It just seems to give me a sense of well being and more energy.

I encourage you to try it and experiment with different brands and substitute with a banana or blueberries, peaches and other fruit to you find something you like and will stick with. Give it a month and see if you don't feel better.

Choline is a water soluble B vitamin. It helps keep cell membranes fluid and helps cells to communicate with each other more effectively. It also helps nerves to interact with muscles by forming part of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.
