The side effects are for the most part non-existent and I recommend if you are a type 2 diabetic, you add this valuable fruit to your supplement regimen. I personally take a supplement rather than drinking a lot of the juice because of the sugar content. I DO use the pure pomegranate juice in making water kefir.
