Their findings showed that a daily intake of fish oil (ONLY 1,370 milligrams of EPA/DHA resulted in the following effects:
- 9% reduction in cardiac death
- 13% reduction in sudden death
- 11% reduction in myocardial infarction or heart attack
- 4% reduction in all cause mortality
The authors then apparently found that this data did NOT have any statistically significant association and that there were NO likely benefits in the 20 studies where a modest dose of fish oil was used for a short treatment term of two years. Go Figure?
(YET) JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) published benefits on fish oil as listed below:
- SUBSTANTIAL reduction in triglycerides (Even THE FDA recognizes this)
- Reduction in serious arrhythmia's or irregular heartbeat
- Decreased platelet aggregation (protects against CLOTS)
- Modest reduction in blood pressure
Fish oil also protects against inflammation.
Apparently the real BENEFIT of Omega 3's in fish oil come from HIGHER Doses. A randomized placebo-controlled trial found out that 1800 mg of combined EPA and DHA was associated with a 10% LOWER rate of cardiac events, 12% LOWER rate of non-fatal infarction's and almost 11% LOWER rate of cardiac deaths.
In a cited large intervention study, 18,000 patients were randomized to receive either a statin medication alone or a statin plus 1800 mg of EPA fish oil daily. After FIVE YEARS, those with a history of coronary artery disease had a 19% LOWER rate of major coronary events in the statin (PLUS Fish Oil group) than the Statin ALONE group.
An other study cited documented tests involving 1700 mg of omega 3 fatty acids in hemodialysis patients found a 70% REDUCTION in relative risk of myocardial infarction.
An other study involving 2000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids daily resulted in 40% improvement in flow mediated dilation which is a marker of endothelial cell health.
We will end with this one:
The GISSI-prevenzione study (large randomized controlled trial) found that 1000 mg/daily of EPA/DHA in 11,323 patients with a HISTORY of recent myocardial infarction reduced the risk of total mortality by 20% and sudden death by 45%
Do I personally understand all the parameters and idiosyncrasies and implications of these studies and the details of exactly what they mean - NOT REALLY!
I just learned enough to realize that taking Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil can't hurt and it appears to HELP a lot. This could be especially relevant to aging diabetic men and women who are susceptible to heart disease and a host of negative cardiovascular events. Almost anyone can afford to be taking a decent supplement of omega 3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil.
Do I understand all the workings of my automobile's engine, drive train, brakes etc.? NO- but I still drive the vehicle almost every day and feel safe in it.
DO I understand the finer workings of a Jet Engine on a large passenger aircraft? NO, but I still get on one and fly across the ocean or the country occasionally.
I recommend it.

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your MIGHT" Ecclesiastes 9:10
For we are God's handiwork.' Ephesians 2:10 NIV
Your mind is the doorway to your heart, and when a questionable thought arises, you always have a choice. You can throw the door open and let it in, or do what the Bible says: ‘Fight to capture every thought until it acknowledges the authority of Christ.’ (2 Corinthians 10:5 PHPS) In other words, capture the thought before it captures you. Let’s say a thought regarding your self–worth arises and says, ‘You’ve been a loser all your life. You’ve failed in relationships and jobs and ambitions. You might as well write “loser” on your CV, for that’s what you are.’ The average person would say to that thought, ‘You’re right; come on in.’ But you’re not the average person! You’re a new creation in Christ, led by His Spirit. So rather than let the thought in, take it captive, present it to the Lord and say, ‘Jesus, this thought says I’m a loser and I’ll never amount to anything. What do You think?’ See what you’re doing? You’re submitting that thought to the authority of Jesus. If He agrees with it, then let it in. If not, kick it to the kerb! How do you know if He agrees or disagrees? Open your Bible and find out what God says about you. ‘We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ (Ephesians 2:10 NIV) What about this one? ‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.’ (Romans 8:1 NIV) Any thought that doesn’t line up with God’s Word doesn’t pass the test—and doesn’t gain entrance. That’s how you manage your mind!
